212386 2004-02-05 21:52:00 I am not currently running dual-booting. I have been switching between XP & 98SE Ghost images for diagnostic purposes.

The issue of incorrect drive letters is not an issue as I will reinstall XP a final time once I pin down the problem.

@ugh1 -what will switching off the power managements settings in the BIOS do? I will try as you suggest but am wondering what possible conflict this setup could do? Especially from a clean reinstall.

Thanks to all respondents. Your replies are all apreciated.

If the card is PCI2.2 compliant ( which I think it is ) the power management can also be done by BIOS and not just the OS which can cause conflicts if the supplied driver does not take control.

I have come across a few problems with sound cards dropping out beacuse the BIOS has told them too go to sleep as it thought they where idle... I have also encountered the same problem with network cards.

What is also strange is I have seen drivers that will do power management for win98, but not for win2k or XP. Also the OS's will do it differentley.

A good method of checking if the driver is power management aware is to check the properties tab of the device in device manager and see if a power tab is present.

You do not need to disable power management all together, unless you have no other choice, as most BIOS will allow you to do it on a slot / IRQ basis, so if that is the case just turn it off for the slot the card is in.

212388 2004-02-06 02:58:00 try using a different set of speakers or earphones, the fact that the sound played up then cutout like that leads me to beleve a hardware rather than software issue

212389 2004-02-07 10:30:00 @jacob4165 -This also happens using S/PDIF passthrough so I don't see how it could be the speakers. Plus they work fine with the onboard sound. The only hardware I have not been able to replace for comparsion is the video card and the mobo. Everything else has either been temporarily removed or disabled.

@ugh1 -Why should this suddenly become an issue with an OS operating fine and playing games and music OK?

If I had a dollar every time someone asked that question I would be just as rich as billy boy<grin >

Give it a try and see if it cures your problem, if not then it is not the problem and you will need to consult the higher power...
