212515 2004-02-03 05:29:00 Hi Team

Norton SystemWorks 2003 (NAV2003) & W2K

Can anybody short-circuit the search process and tell me why the Norton Update Service tells me that all applications are fully updated when I know there is a huge Ghost update waiting, having just updated two other computers?

I also know the virus defs are out of date and even NAV puts up an alert to tell me that I need to update urgently.

Hopefully somebody else has encountered this recently and can save me the time and trouble of searching the Norton knowledgebase.

Cheers

212516 2004-02-03 05:44:00 Most liveupdate issues are fixed by installing a newer version of the lusetup.exe. Symantec used to have a nice page with all this information on it, but they seem to have replaced it with this one (service1.symantec.com). Jen C (20)
212517 2004-02-03 07:16:00 Thanks Jen, but no luck there, in fact NAV says exactly the same thing (more or less), namely that the existing lusetup.exe is up to date. I even took the precaution of renaming the existing file before attempting the install so it looks like NAV checks the registry for this info.

Has anybody ventured down registry lane for this problem? A guy could easily get lost in there.:(

212518 2004-02-03 08:22:00 Well, some progress has been made!

I delved 200-odd files deep into the Symantec Knowledgebase to 57% relevance rating and came up with this (service1.symantec.com) set of articles which is exactly what I needed. The answers all hang in various links off this one article. You wouldn't want to look that far on dial-up, it took ages on jetstream and I tried several different search terms before settling on "live update" as having the most productive looking results, but over 500 of them to sift!

I'll try the various answers tomorrow and report results.

212519 2004-02-12 07:21:00 OK, so I tried everything Symantec's KB suggested and it remained adamant that everything was up to date. I removed duplicate live.update files, check all the various file versions etc, unified date records, sacrificed 23 innocent chickens and prayed to gods the Gods hadn't even heard of, then I gave up and fixed it the way I oughta done in the first place instead of wasting hours of my time. X-(

I started the dump of a Ghost Image then went and had a cup of tea to calm my nerves. Ten minutes later I did a quick live update and all was back to normal. I'd love to know what the problem really was, but in the end a fix is a fix is a fix. :|
