212734 2004-02-04 05:24:00 it encodes in a dv format that can be dv, dvpro or dvcam dependant on your camera and/or selection.

Upon transferring to your pc, it should be in an avi format using a dv codec. If you use a capture card it'll usually be stored in a proprietary varient of the dv codec that can be aquired from the manufacturer of your capture card.

The simplest way to get your dv recordings onto a dvd is to get a dvd recorder and use either the svhs or rgb/yuv component interconnects. Avoid the composite (normal yellow video RCA) connection if you can because it has half the resolution and therefore will give worse quality. Press play on your camera and record on the dvd recorder and voila!

The cheapest way is to get someone else to do it for you.. a video processing house, sound centre or hifi store should be able to do this for a nominal fee.

212735 2004-02-04 10:10:00 You can get units that record directly into mpeg2,they advertise it as a feature but it affects quality(compressing/encoding on the fly)

If it was me i would buy a dvd burner, you can get em for about $200 at the moment.

Then you can do all your editing, encoding, authoring and burning from the computer you have allready paid good money for.

212737 2004-02-10 08:06:00 Well Ulead programs are pretty good. I got mine with a TV tuner. Ulead Videostudio, Moviefactory and 3D. I use these with a Panasonic digital cam and firewire. It does the job quite nicely. Spacemannz (808)
212738 2004-02-10 22:07:00 I also use ULead. Capturing movie from tape is easy using firewire, but I can't get any audio. I have also tried Sony ImageMixer 1.5 and WinFast 2000 with the same result. About the only s'ware that works for video/audit is Windoes Movemaker, but it saves files in .wmv format.
While we're on the subject, does anyone know if I can record directly from DV camcorder to DVD recorder using an appropriate cable? I haven't bought a DVD recorder yet, but I am seriously thinking about it...:))

212739 2004-02-10 22:16:00 Im recording dirctly from vhs player to dvd burner using the winfast tv card and its supplied software.well the latest version of its supplied software.

So i would guess that firewire to dvd is possible.

212740 2004-02-10 23:34:00 Let me get this right - you're taking material from video tape directly to dvd using your PC? How is the VCR/PC hooked up? I have old video tapes that I would like to get onto dvd.
btw I'm still wondering if it's possible to record directly from camcorder to one of those recordable dvd gadgets, similar to a video recorder?

212741 2004-02-11 01:31:00 I have the video player video-out feeding into my TV card,I have the audio feeding into my sound card input.

Then I fire up the winfast application for my TV card,go into options set it to record audio from the line in,and when choosing what format to record in I select copy-to-dvd.

Then I start the vhs playing, then hit the record button on the winfast software and the computer encodes and records as I watch the video.

Initially I was worried about the quality of on-the-fly encoding but I have been pleasantly surprised by the results.

212742 2004-02-11 05:25:00 Yup u can record directly fro DV cam (firewire) to DVD if u have a DVD burner. I'm pretty sure Moviefactory/Videostudio can do that.

I dont think u can do it with a DV cam with only USB, as USB wouldnt be fast enough for it. USB DV cams are usually for video conferencing, not video editing, due to the speed/transfer speed of USB. Which would most probably be USB 1.1 not 2.
