212631 2004-02-03 19:12:00 I know that quite a few here are KDE users, so I thought I'd post to say that KDE 3.2 is finally released. Ive just reformatted this weekend and decided to give kde another shot on my desktop. Will have to upgrade soon :-)

To quote the announcement (www.kde.org):
KDE 3.2 also provides improvements in usability and performance. Noticeable speed boosts in application start up times and webpage rendering together with many interface refinements make KDE 3.2 the most usable and performant KDE ever. Attention was also paid to ensuring that KDE is accessible to those with disabilities. Several accessibility related applications are included with 3.2 and work on integrating accessibility technologies directly into KDE's foundations is ongoing.

KDE has earned a reputation for quality and a comprehensive feature set among its global user base that is estimated to number in the millions. KDE is also proud to be the default user interface for several operating systems including Ark Linux, Conectiva, Knoppix, Lindows, Lycoris, Mandrake Linux, SUSE Linux, TurboLinux and Xandros. KDE is also available as a part of Debian, Free/Open/NetBSD, Gentoo, Libranet, Red Hat Linux, Slackware and Solaris, among others. In addition to these operating system vendors, more and more companies are offering commercial support for KDE, some of which are listed in the business directory of the KDE::Enterprise website. With the release of KDE 3.2, the KDE Project looks to enhance and grow this ecosystem of users and supporters.

KDE 3.2 can be downloaded over the Internet by visiting download.kde.org. Source code and vendor supplied and supported binary packages are available. KDE 3.2 will also be featured in upcoming releases of various Linux and UNIX operating systems and can be purchased separately on CD-ROM.

Currently I could only see Slackware 9.1 .tgz files:
download.kde.org

But there are Deb's, SuSE rpms, Conectiva Linux 9 packages.
End-User created packs are likely to be available today, with official released packages not far off.

Lets hear of anybody who installs it :-)

Cheers

Chill.

212632 2004-02-03 20:09:00 Cheers for the heads up chill. Pesonnally I prefer a much more minimilistic desktop enviroment. Its nice to have a choice :) Keep up the good work. mark.p (383)
212633 2004-02-03 20:13:00 Ha, yes, just saw your WindowMaker screenshot.

If Xfce had a few more features, I'd likely go with that.
I use a cut-down xfwm + gnome-toolbar on my XBox :D

Its great... add a little nano.. throw in a ~/.xinitrc file... shake well and voila! ;-)

212634 2004-02-03 20:39:00 Now now your bias has slipped ;) Been meaning to get an XBox, haven't seen a real NEED for one yet-plenty of older PCs to muck around with. Maybe one day................... Oh here's my usual Linux desktop-sal.neoburn.net one of the usual 4 I swap between (try that on a default MS Windows GUI without 3rd party apps.) depending on the task at hand. mark.p (383)
212635 2004-02-03 21:16:00 WooHoo - KDE 3.2! :D

Been hanging around waiting for this after reading the excellent reports back from the release candidates. Now to find a server that is not too overloaded.

{b]mark.p[/b] - nice desktop!

212637 2004-02-04 06:28:00 Did it! - have KDE 3.2 up and running :D

30 rpm's (total 175 MB) thrown into one directory and made to fight it out :p

OK, well I have only had it running for a short time and so far I have lost my way around the menu (nothing is where it was last!) and my Firebird shortcut needs redoing as well as a couple of other installed apps which will no longer launch. But looking good so far :D

212638 2004-02-04 06:43:00 Speed any good?

This on Fedora?
Chilling_Silently (228)

Yes, this is on my Fedora Core 1 box. Well, I have had a good play now, mainly with changing the Appearance and Themes options :D. It does seem a little faster to launch programs.

But I now have X locking-up a quite few times now when opening up something - you can move the mouse but not do anything with it. Hitting ESC fixes it though. This never used to happen so it must be related to KDE 3.2. I should ckeck out the new bug reports for it.

The most noticeable visual change is the KMenu. System now has over 33 apps listed, I have a menu for Lost & Found which contains Keyboard, Mouse, Security Level, Terminal, User Group etc, which seems a little strange how they ended up under that menu.

As mentioned before, some non-KDE apps either vanished off the KMenu or Taskbar and had to be re-added. But overall, KDE 3.2 is certainly a improvement. You can read about all the new/improved things in Chill's announcement link.

Anyway, here is a quick screenshot of KDE 3.2 (sal.neoburn.net) (running Fedora and kernel 2.6)

I have had to hit ESC a few times since starting this reply due to the
desktop freezing ... I wonder if my Acqua theme which I installed for 3.1.4
is not 100% compatible with 3.2 - might have to go to a default look for a
while and test that out

212640 2004-02-04 19:54:00 Wow... Nice :-)

Have you tried running kappfinder to re-add the K menu entries?

On another note, Qt (The windowing manager for KDE) version 3.3 has been released, supposedly 64-bit compatible!

Read more about it here:
lwn.net

In other Linux news, kernel-2.6.2 is out!
As of about 10:04 pm on February 3rd, Linux users can grab the official 2.6.2 kernel release from kernel.org. A lot of PPC fixes. Changelog is here." omniru writes "Linux kernel 2.6.2 aka 'Feisty Dunnart' released," and adds some possibly useful information (www.cse.unsw.edu.au) "about Dunnarts, in case you've never heard of them before. Changes include ACPI, Bluetooth, USB, XFS and many more improvements and fixes."

Im still compiling... On 3 of 21 - kdebase :'(
