212505 2004-02-03 06:09:00 Well after reading the posts in F1 about people trying linux i decided to give it a go.
So i got myself a copy of red hat 9 and worked out how to install it on my computer i must have done it right because it WORKS lol.
But i need some help please on setting up my scanner.
The scanner is a hp scanjet 3200c which if i have read the doc's in re hat correctley
is a umax scanner. but for the life of me i cannot follow the install instuctions in the doc's
So i would be very grateful if someone could explain it to me in plain english how to get my scanner working.

Thanks in advance

212506 2004-02-03 06:19:00 Greetings,

Congratulations on installing Redhat, long live your happy days ;-)

AFAIK you use SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy) to configure scanners. Going from memory you can run a command like:
sane-find-scanner

Is it USB or Parallel?
This may help:

Does Redhat come with xsane?

Cheers

212507 2004-02-03 06:43:00 The scanner is a parallel port model.
But what i forgot to say was that is goes though my printer.
Is that a problem.
And please could you tell me how to find xsane in rh9

Thanks for your help

212508 2004-02-03 07:00:00 Open a konsole/gnome-terminal and type:
xsane

That's how you run programs in Linux, just type their name :-)

Hit Alt + F2 and type xsane.

If it runs.. Its installed.. If not... Then it isnt ;-)

Im not sure if that's a problem or not with it running the printer too?

212509 2004-02-03 07:38:00 I would recommend upgrading to Fedora as I was having fun geting my (Slide & negative) scanner running in RH9 and it just worked with Fedora. mikebartnz (21)
212510 2004-02-03 09:09:00 Thanks for that
I opened a konsole/terinal and typed in "xsane" yes the program is there but it only detects my usb web cam.

I have had a look at the doc"s again and i ended up with a headache lol
So any more help would be great
Thanks once again

212511 2004-02-04 02:56:00 If it doesn't work in RedHat, it's unlikely to work in Fedora. This isn't an OS kernel problem: it's a hardware driver problem. It's obsolete hardware, and Umax didn't release the technical information for their parallel port scanners. As far as I know, the working drivers are for the SCSI Umax scanners (for which Umax did release the information).

There are quite a few scanners which aren't supported in Linux. There are quite a few scanners which aren't supported in Windows XP. (I believe that HP/Umax scanner worked well in Windows 3.11 :D)

Parallel port devices apart from printers are difficult, anyway. It was always a fudged up system. (And that's a polite opinion. ;-))

You could try making sure that the lp.o module isn't installed (lsmod, and rmmod lp if it is there. But I doubt that this scanner will work. :-(

Look at the "sane" home page ... it's probably www.sane.org/ ... for a list of the supported scanners.

212512 2004-02-04 04:28:00 Thanks for that Graham L
i have checked the sane website and looked up my scanner and it says that it is supported and will work. My problem is that because i am new to linux i cannot work out in plain english have to get it working.
And to make matters worst i am on my second box of panadol lol
My plan was if i could get the scanner working under linux to swap to linux for a month to see if i could come to grips with it. i need to be able to scan things in for my work.
Any more advice would be most welcome cheers chris

212513 2004-02-04 05:39:00 Ok, a bit more digging shows that it is there. But printer port stuff has to be set up right to work, and then have the wind in the right quarter.

At least while getting started, unplug the printer. Stop the lpd server and unload the lp module. I see there is a manual page: man sane-umax-pp. It might help, but manual pages are usually good for telling you things (if you know it already) and short on examples. Have you looked at that web page C-S suggested? From the name it might be useful. What don't you understand in the instructions? They are never clear English -- the aim is to get them unambiguous and precise ;-)

It might help to browse some of the online books, to get a feel for how things are done, and what the terminology means. You've probably got the RH "Getting Started" manual installed already. The Rute book is brilliant: rute.sf.net/ , and the Linux cookbook is useful: http: .

212514 2004-02-07 01:35:00 I've had a look at my RH9, and can suggest these things to do. (I haven't got that scanner ...) The manual page is sane-umax_pp, and it's worth reading. Then go to the /etc/sane.d directory. Edit dll.conf --- well down the file there is a line "#umax-pp". Delete the "#". Have a look at umax-pp.conf. If the port address setting (which will be the default 378) doesn't make it work, have a look and see if the "/dev/ " nodes have been created ( "ls /dev/pp* ") and try the pport0 one. ("#" makes the rest of the line a comment). You shouldn't need to change any other lines in the umax-pp.conf file. Graham L (2)
