213053 2004-02-05 22:29:00 Having bad experiences with the last 2 computers, I want to get your advice on a good solid company.

Looking for a computer around $2500
Want as much customization as possible.

The computer is going to be used for moderate gaming, DVD movies, word, email, and calculations, and rendering with a lighting program, so it needs to be desent.

As we have had problems with the last one, i want you people to advise, and explain why you reccomend things.

Want it cool and quiet.

Somewhere around 2.8 ghz, maybe 512mb ram, Geforce 5700 Ultra if that is good.

Also, please explain all this RAM mhz and FSB things.

Thanks

213054 2004-02-05 22:56:00 Best place to buy a computer: PC Tech!! I bought one 4 years ago, My daughter bought one two years ago, my sister bought one a year ago. None of us has had any major problem.

I bought another yesterday:
2.8 GHZ 800FSB,Intel 965GLCL motherboard
1 Gig MB DDR RAM
Floppy, 50-52 CD rom drive, Ricoh MP5240A DVD+RW/+writer
ATX midi tower case USB front
Creative Inspire speakers
17" LCD Phillips monitor
Modem
XP Home
All software CDs and manuals were present
Service was good but they do expect you to know something of the jargon!!
Total cost $2770 and I know Ican take backanything that I don't like.
Good hunting1

213055 2004-02-05 23:21:00 Another option is to build your own computer :), then you can open up the case & you can easily customize it.

Good luck!

213056 2004-02-05 23:57:00 I would go to a local computer place and ask them to make the computer you want. Ask them to use only brandname parts (asus, gigabyte, etc) and you will avoid a lot of problems. bmason (508)
213057 2004-02-06 03:22:00 PB Tech (Auckland or Hamilton) I buy a huge amount of gear from them and have dealt with them for 5 years. Out of 50-60 complete systems I have bought for myself, friends and work I have only ever had one fail due to faulty capacitors which they replaced while I waited. They are not the cheapest (nor the most expensive) but offer outstanding service, especially the Hamilton branch. They prefer building intel systems to any configuration you like but will build amd systems if you want.
And no I don't work there.

213058 2004-02-06 03:25:00 You can have fun building your own one online to the specs you want at www.ascent.co.nz. They can make it up for you once you've decided what you want, plus free courier is a bonus.

Thats what I'd be doing if I wanted to buy one, but I'd just get them to courier me the parts and I'd have fun building it myself.

213059 2004-02-06 03:39:00 I spent about 6 months looking at various options from building to buying offshore (eg Dell) etc. Eventually found just what I wanted at Noel Leemings for $2599 (minus monitor which I had). I also liked the idea of buying from a local store which is handy if needing help or for warranties etc: h50025.www5.hp.com Mike-Y (908)
213060 2004-02-06 04:05:00 everyone is going to have their pet favorites for this.

however it might be a good idea to post what aera (roughly) you live as someone may know a good local store/tech.

>Want as much customization as possible

this rules out any supermarket pc's such as dell or hp/compaq

>Want it cool and quiet

those don't often go together. pick your case wisely.

>rendering with a lighting program

is this pc going to be used for work purposes? if so look at stability rather than speed and also ease of backups.
