212975 2004-02-05 04:40:00 I have set up a Compaq laptop for our church to drive data display projector for display of both song lyrics and powerPoint presentations.

Compaq is a Presario of approx 350Mhz running W98SE. (I don't have my hands on it at the moment.)

We are having problems running PowerPoint (Office 97 Version) because it will not run in Dual mode. (I am told this is a feature with Office 2000 version and upwards.) However, it also refuses to stay on the display screen even when started on that part of the desktop. I can start Notepad on the second screen and it will display there but PowerPoint insists on displaying back on the primary screen, ie. the laptop monitor.

Two questions:

1. Is there any way to display PowerPoint 97 on the secondary display.

2. Assuming no one has answers for my rambling status report, if we decide to move to PowerPoint 2000, will this run under W98SE ??

TKU in Advance

Laptops have a way of switch to the secondary disply-usually by press the Fn key and a button with an icon that looks like a moniter.

212977 2004-02-05 06:12:00 Your problem is only getting PPT to oerate in dual monitor mode, as I understand your question.
Not getting the laptop to operate 2 monitors.

You are right that PPT 97 does not offer the function.

There is software that is supposed to do this for PPT 97, from:

http://www.iosysoft.com/

Its US $35 though.

PPT 2000 should run fine on Windows 98.

212978 2004-02-06 07:27:00 Thanks for the responses, PPC97 certainly looks promising. Downloading now but website looks a bit neglected. Under construction signs and no updates since March 2002. Appreciate the pointer tho.

Yes we can switch modes on the laptop but it is a bit clumsy to use and not every operator (including moi) is comfortable with the sequence of commands to changeover.

Thanks again

212979 2004-02-06 21:10:00 Whew !! Must post a warning here. I downloaded the PPC97 zip file frorm the website "Godfather" pointed to. Had a brief brain lapse and ran setup IN SPITE OF A COMPLETE LACK OF SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION OR NOTES. (I am shouting at myself.)

Result is that Explorer is now screwed and prevents WIN98 loading even in safe mode.

Have commandeered the intuitive one's e-mail machine (with appropriate promises) and connected through a spare modem so I can research and hopefully fix problem. First up though is to set up a spare harddrive to recover some data.

I may post again in new post when I have researched further in PressF1 FAQ's and MS K'Base stuff. The messages are;

"MSVCRT.DDL file is linked to missing export file NTDLL.DLL:RtlGetNtVersionNumber"

An "OK" button is only response and then it says;

"Error loading Explorer.exe. You must reinstall Windows."

Done that but no change to messages.

Priority at the moment is to get data off my hard disk in case I have to do a reformat. I intend to reformat a spare disk and install windows on that in sick machine so I can recover data. THen I will look at reloading software. Meanwhile suggestions would be welcome - Yes even reminders to be careful with ANY unknowns and to keep good backups.

I have a rather long PP presentation to give and I want to run my slides on the projector and view my notes on the laptop. I was going to post a question about this as I hadn't had any success searching the PP2000 Help files. Thanks to Godfather's omniscience I don't need to ask!

Thanks Godfather

212981 2004-02-08 02:01:00 We had exactly the same problem, Stunpy . We upgraded to Office 2000 on a Pentium133 machine . It runs fine, but a little slow to start .

Might I also recommend a specialist piece of software for the lyrics - www . discoverysystems . com . au/presenter/default . htm] ( . " target="_blank"> [url) Presenter[ It is much easier to use than powerpoint for song lyrics . My 9 year old runs it perfectly well .

212982 2004-02-08 02:15:00 Make that presenter (www.discoverysystems.com.au). It costs a bit, but is well worth it. wotz (335)
212983 2004-02-08 03:54:00 Yes thanks - we are running Presenter and like you find it very good.

Switching to PowerPoint and back is clumsy because you have to use special function keys and reset screen mode at each change. Awkward enough for experienced ppl but f course we have some not so experienced as well.

Looks like PPT 2000 is our answer.

212984 2004-02-08 03:56:00 Stumbled on this with regards to Openoffice's Impress in XP, which isn't ment to be dual monitor capable. May work in Win 98. Worth a shot I guess.

"Here are the steps to show an Impress presentation on an external monitor on a Windows XP laptop.

Overview: Make the external monitor you primary monitor, then extend the desktop onto your second monitor (your built-in laptop monitor).

1. Hook up your external monitor/projector to your laptop.
2. Use your laptop's keyboard keys to output ONLY TO THE EXTERNAL DISPLAY not both. (Func + 10 or Func + 5, etc.) Make sure your native resolution is not too high for the external monitor or projector (often 800x600 or 1024x768)
3. On the external monitor screen (desktop) right click and select properties -> settings. (Your "Number 1" monitor should be the external monitor/projector.
4. Click the "Number 2" monitor and then click "Extend my windows desktop onto this monitor". Click "Apply" and your laptop monitor should come on with only the desktop background, not the task bar.
5. Now open an Impress file, drag it to your laptop screen, click the presentation mode and it will display on the external monitor/projector. Your file (with notes) should display only on your laptop screen. When not in presentation mode, the Window's Task Bar should also display on the external monitor.
6. Reverse the steps to return to normal or just reboot.
