213404 2004-02-07 01:35:00 Hi all, just a quick question, basically i want to update the drivers on the video card: Nvidia GeForce4 MX420. I haven't actually done an update on these drivers before yet, so they are the ones the card was installed with at the shop i.e about a year old. Basically i don't like to fiddle with things if i don't need to etc... Anyway the computer is going fine no probs. but my partner is a bit of a gamer (which means i should probably do more regular vid card driver updates for him i guess) and when i was installing a new game i got a message - That it had detected the system "agp acceleration" was not enabled, so i checked in the settings to enable it and it "wasn't available". So Chill has wisely suggested that i should update the vid card drivers.
Anyway my question is: Is there a preffered place/method to install the new drivers? i.e Through device manager and card properties using the "update drivers" button OR just uninstall the old ones (add/remove) and run the .exe driver file --- basically will it make any difference which way i do it?? and will i be able to use the "roll back" to previous driver if i run into probs if i install the drivers in either way?
I also read in a google search that apparently some display adapters won't give the option of "agp acceleration" so i am guessing that may be the case here?

Cheers

213405 2004-02-07 01:43:00 remove the old ones via add/remove programs then run the install exe to install the new drivers.

where is it showing or looking for agp acceleration and do you have an agp video card?

Well to be honest, i don't know much about video cards, game settings etc... and when i saw that message saying about the "agp acceleration" i presumed i needed an agp video card and thought that mine wasn't, being a NVidia geforce, i thought that was the brand?:|?? As, as i said i am not up with things in this area unfortunately:-(. Anyway the setting for the "agp acceleration" is in the "DirextX Diagnostic Tools" setttings - display tab, under directX features.

213407 2004-02-07 02:30:00 o.k just looked somewhere else under the card and i see it says - Bus type: AGP, that would be what you are meaning i guess? So this means i do have an agp card?

213408 2004-02-07 05:48:00 the new nvidia drivers will install over the top of existing ones so dont bother to remove them just doublt clik the exe to get it up drcspy (146)

It is still recommended (I think even by NVidia) that you remove old drivers and run the default video drivers to make sure the new ones install properly. Some old detonator versions even asked you to uninstall the previous version before they'd install.

Yes, your right there Mike, they do advise that on the site .
So i thought it best to uninstall the old ones first ;-) .
Anyway i did the driver update no probs thankfully, but i was wondering if i would have had the "rollback" option, if i had needed it, after uninstalling the the old ones??

Thanks all :-)

213411 2004-02-07 09:32:00 there are also programs out there free which will save aside all your current drivers into a folder ........now that's handy cause specially if you format or whatever........saves a LOT of hassle...... drcspy (146)
