2004-02-06 11:21:00 | Ok we've recently switched off jetstart onto the 256k jetstream home 1000 plan. Unbelievable I know. I'm guessing your thinking "who is dumb enough to go for such a bad deal." Its not like I had much choice in the matter, my dad required a faster connection for his home business. Anyway I've been looking at the usage meter and already its at 966mb out of the 1000 and we've got till the 23 Feb till it renews itself again. I'm thinking this can't be all that accurate, no-one is downloading anything substantial, just general surfing. So how accurate is this usage meter?? Is there another way we can get a second opinion on how much has been used this month? We live in Invercargill and the new wireless is out. I guess its a no-brainer to switch over to that. Unlimited traffic, same speed and for $59.80 per month. Thats about $10 cheaper than the Jetstream home plan. Soem questions though. Who out there has some experience with woosh? How do you share the internet connection between 3pcs? We have a router/switch but can we hook that up to the modem. Or would we have to use something as evil as ICS? I hear pings could be bad for online gaming is this true??

Now, I know it might sound silly, but you should always take the usage meters with a grain of salt. They aren't exactly known to be 100% reliable. What you should check is automatic updates and the likes on your computers. If each compter is set to automatically update, you could churn through a lot of usage easily. I would suggest setting up a proxy if you haven't already done so, and run all HTTP and FTP requests through it, which will decrease load times and usage. Also, turn off any automatic updates and download updates that are necessary once, to a server (or one computer); install them as necessary on all computers from that location. You may or may not want to keep them afterwards, but if you ever format, or anything like that, they may come in useful. Another thing to look for (less likely though) are internet nasties. Scan all your computers for viruses, spyware, trojans, etc. AVG (www.grisoft.com), Avast! (http:), Spybot - S&D (security.kolla.de), and Ad-Aware (http:) are free utilities you can use to do these tasks. |

2004-02-07 11:55:00 | Usage meters that actually work? WHERE? The only meter i can get into with telecom is the one that tells me the bills, and in that situation, how much download i used, LAST MONTH... Where is this fabled usage meter? Do tell!

2004-02-07 23:43:00 | Is there a little program you can use that tells you how much you have used? Something on the computer, not on the internet. | mejobloggs (264) | |

2004-02-08 00:45:00 | There are a couple mentioned here (files.inspire.net.nz) Try googling some, or checking out download.com or something. As always, these will only monitor usage for one machine, not multiple machines on a network yada yada yada
