213470 2004-02-07 09:22:00 I have an old Toshiba 430CDS laptop that I want reformat and reinstall windows on. It has Win 95 installed that was preinstalled from new along with win 3.11. According to the manual the fisrt time it was turned on when new you had a choice as to which operating system to install. Then it explains how to back up Win 95 to lots of floppies. Can I transfer the required files to my destop via a network cable along with the Toshiba utilities then reformat the drive and then reinstall? How? Thanks. Andrew B (867)
213471 2004-02-07 18:19:00 if both puters have network cards yes you can but one thing I would be sure to do is to back up yoru driver files from teh laptop otherwise you may run into a bit of bother when you format then reload windoze....... drcspy (146)
213472 2004-02-07 20:22:00 As I understand it you dont have the "Windows 95 on lots of floppies" now?

The only way you may be able to do what you want is by using a drive imaging program, but that will restore an exact copy of what you have now. Dross and all.

I assume the Laptop has no CD drive.

You really do need a copy of Win 95 on disks (all 30+ of them!) as I see it.

213473 2004-02-07 20:25:00 If it has the CD ROM option, then a copy of someones Windows 95 on CD would be far quicker, you alraedy have a licence for it with the PC. godfather (25)
213474 2004-02-07 20:51:00 Thanks GF, no, i haven't got Win 95 on floppies, but yes, it does have a CD Drive. So I will try and borrow a copy of of Win 95 on CD as you suggest. Sounds easier than copying onto 30 something floppies. I guess I just need to copy over drivers and the Toshiba manual etc first. Thanks for your help. Andrew B (867)
213475 2004-02-07 21:02:00 As I understand it you no longer have the option to copy onto the floppies anyway. That was a first boot time only possibility perhaps? godfather (25)
213476 2004-02-07 21:43:00 Not sure about that, GF, I was just looking for hopefully an easier way. And I don't have 30 something floppies handy at the moment. Andrew B (867)
213477 2004-02-08 01:21:00 Have a look for .CAB files. You might have them all on the disk, all ready to be copied across. :D (It would have deleted the files for the other OS after the selection --- only one was paid for :D).

If they are there, the whole of that directory should be the same as the WIN95 directory on a W95 installatiion CD. That's all that's needed for the OS installation.

Does that model use the TSETUP programme rather than a ROM BIOS setup? If so, make sure you have a copy of that and any others which are Toshiba specific. They'd probably be in a directory of their own. The manual should give an idea of that. Also look for anythingh that looks like drivers.

213478 2004-02-09 08:33:00 Thanks, Graham L. In a folder called Cabs in the Windows folder there are 140 files including about 28 Winzip files Win95_02.cab Win95_03.cab etc. Is this what I'm looking for? After transferring all these files to my other computer, if I copy the appropriate files to a CD, wil that be my installation disc for the laptop after refomating?
Thanks

213479 2004-02-10 02:01:00 Those are the ones . There should be a file in there called setup . exe which willstart the installation . There should be a few . com and . exe etc, and a few . cab files which are not Win95_** . cab . These are used for the installation . It's a good idea to format the new disk and make a directory called c:\win95 then copy all thos files into it . That way, you do the installation from the hard disk which makes it quicker, and the files are always there for reinstallations and refreshing drivers .

Before you make the CD, it would be a good idea to download the patch files for W95 so you have them . (You can get most of them from this handy shop ( . 62nds . co . nz/cgi-bin/x/e2420 . html?ta2wt" target="_blank">www . 62nds . co . nz)) .

Also, get the key number (the Help/About should have it .
