213271 2004-02-06 08:09:00 Hi
After reinstalling Excel I find that if I try to open 2 or more files from within Windows Explorer or from within Excel itself, it open in more than one instance of the program, rather than 2 files WITHIN the one running application

What can I do to correct this please?

TIA
Ron

213272 2004-02-06 08:12:00 That is correct, and it isn't a "problem" as such. It's not actually two instances of the program (apparently), but rather that you can access both windows from the task bar, as you can also still do from the Window menu. I think this was first introduced in Office 2002 (maybe Office 2000, but I don't think so).

The same will happen in Word and other Office apps.

213273 2004-02-06 09:51:00 Thanks Mike

What I want is to be able to see all open Excel (or Word) files by accessing the Windows Menu

Can I alter the setting assuming its a Microsoft default so that I can do this?

Incidentally in Excel, before the 2nd file opens I get a message that "Personal.xls is locked for editing"
That file contains my macros But as soon as I click cancel, it seems to free up the macros for ONE of the files. There are no macros available in the second file as per the message

In the old arrangement the "personal.xls" file was available for as many files as I cared to open - that's what I need again.

Any further thoughts?

TIA

Ron

213274 2004-02-06 11:04:00 If you want each file to open in the same window, then you will have to enable MDI.
SDI is set by default.

Tools (in Excel) - Options - View. Click to clear the "Windows in Taskbar" check box - OK.

213275 2004-02-06 12:07:00 Hi Godfather
Have tried that and it makes no difference I'm afraid
It seems as if its the "File locked for editing" issue thats at the crux and the Personal Macro Workbook in particular
Have tried unhiding and saving etc but no joy
Have also done a "detectand Repair" with no change

Any other thoughts?

TIA

213276 2004-02-06 12:10:00 Hi again

Just a further thought - I have tried removing the Personal.xls file from the Xlstart folder altogether but again no effect

213277 2004-02-06 21:28:00 If "Windows in taskbar" is not working for you, it suggests that Excel is damaged somehow.

With the option ticked, each .xls will open in a new instance of Excel (if opened directly from a file not from within Excel)

With the option unticked, each .xls opens within the same instance. Thats the intent and the way it works (here) on Excel 2002. Excel 2000 works the same, but 97 does not.

213278 2004-02-06 23:56:00 Hi Again all

Have resolved the problem after 2 reinstalls etc that did nothing
The solution is in the Windows Explorer, File Types settings - Advanced
There I UNCHECKED "Browse in same Window"
Now it works fine

Thanks for your suggestions though
