213238 2004-02-06 06:48:00 Ok i know this question has probly been asked 10 million times before, but can some please tell me the advantages/disadvantages of having windows and linux on the same computer?
And i installed some more ram the other day, and now my sound lags on some system sounds, ie when people talk on msn, and in card games and stuff.
Any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks, hsv-b0y

213239 2004-02-06 07:27:00 the only thing is partitioning

and the learning curve

but there are a lot of linux users here, and most dual boot with windows

i myself have windows xp and mandrake linux 9, but on different machines

i think the best thing about dual booting is that if a huge worm/virus comes out for windows, i can put the old external modem on the linux box and surf the net laughing ;)

there are also disadvantages, but i can't think of them

you do give up a bit of hd space, however linux will run on as little or as much as you like

213240 2004-02-06 07:39:00 i know about the partitioning, so windows and linux can still use the same modem? (i dont know anything about linux). hsv-b0y (5210)
213241 2004-02-06 09:05:00 Yep Linux has come a long way from the bad old days of lots of floppy disks and limited support for hardware such as Video Cards and only external modems. Mostly now the installs are much easier and user frendly.

Overall I guess it comes down to personal preferance but if you play a lot of Games I guess your'e stuck with Windoze but overall Linux is probably still inherantly more stable due to the design of the OS (You can kill and restart rouge processes)

The older versions of Linux used to be a little less hungry on computer power and space than Windows etc. but I suspect this has really gone and you do need a reasonable amout of Ram and Disk space.

Have a go - it's worth the adventure

213242 2004-02-06 10:36:00 I would suggest you look into Fedora or (For home users - What my family run on their PC: ) Ark Linux!

My family were totally against Linux, and the idea of leaving Windows XP. I must say, that after changing the default picture viewer and Video Player, they're 100% loving it!

Dual-Booting is really easy with Linux, it sorts it ALL out for you.

If you want a few screenie's, check these ones out I took tonight:
sal.neoburn.net
sal.neoburn.net
sal.neoburn.net

You wont know if you like it / want to use it or not til you try it ;-)

If you've got any questions about Linux, then feel free to post them here :-)

Cheers

If you go to the Web Licks page on the left you'll for a lot of usefull stuff.

Also borrowing a book from the library about Linux may help also.
