213738 2004-02-08 08:45:00 This one really gets me...

Everything had been working fine.. Alsa, kde-3.2... tvtime... kmplayer etc

Restart and put in a DVD+-R/W and it stops everything but tvtime working with sound.

xmms is broken, noaton, kmplayer, all broken... mpg123 and alsaplayer are busted too

tvtime still works... xawtv still works (with sound, couldnt ever get video with it).

mencoder will record video, but not sound from my TV Card.

What's gone wrong? Its un-muted in alsamixer.

artsd is running.

I didnt touch my SB!Live though. Didnt plug in the audio cables.. Sound doesnt work even if I reboot without the DVD+-R/W attached.

cat /proc/pci and its there.. And its partially working coz tvtime will play sound. Nothing else will

Any ideas?

Many thanks

Time to use a 'real' operating system? You know what I mean... ;)

213740 2004-02-08 09:04:00 Try disabling arts, make sure its not still running (killall -9 artsd), then try just mpg123. I've found arts can really mess with some things, even if they don't use it for output. bmason (508)

Yeah, Ark Linux is starting to look more appealing every day now that Ive got the family running KDE-3.2 ;-)

killed arts and mpg123 still doesnt go.

I know my Hardware is still working coz I just booted Knoppix and its peachy, but that uses OSS, and Im running a 2.6 kernel without OSS, only ALSA.

Cheers

There is an OSS wrapper for the 2.6 kernel, have you tried that with the OSS driver?

I have heard of alot of people having problems with the ALSA SB driver and even it's buy me driver still has problems, be it not as many as the free one.

213743 2004-02-08 23:47:00 Hey there Ugh1,

Thanks for the reply.

The driver was working perfectly fine until I rebooted it?
I'd rebooted with KDE-3.2 twice (to take the PC to work) and it was fine.

Its weird because TV works fine from the mic input on the card.

Driver is fine... And OSS - Dont have it compiled into my kernel, didnt want/need it :-)

Cheers

213745 2004-02-09 02:30:00 Are the affected apps using ALSA or OSS output? ALSA includes OSS wrapper modules (snd_pcm_oss etc).

I've had a bit of trouble with OSS output myself.

Umm.. wondering if you may have a mixer issue.. inputs do not need any CPU action, other then enabling them. Can you alter the level of the input signal??

I am enclined to think you are having an API issue.. it is possiable that you are having an ALSA vs OSS issue and would second the comment about checking which driver the apps are using.

I do know that any mp3 libs you have and the likes are ALSA / OSS dependent so do they all check out?

Out of interest was the DVD drive using the analog or digital input on the card? beacuse if it was the digital input you may have triggered an analog cut-out.

All else fails hit the LUG lists as I have seen alot of activity over the 2.6 kernel.

213747 2004-02-09 04:58:00 Ive sorted it!

I had a gut feeling it was a mixer issue (Odd, seeing as it had been working until I rebooted?!), and I was right

Ran kmix when I got home, and there's two options in Kmix, Output and Input.

Everything was fine in the Output, but I needed to up the volume for pcm/wave under Input?

Odd...

As for OSS, I dont have anything to do with it. I have only enabled ALSA in the 2.6 kernel, and have not had a single problem!

All apps were affected (They only use aRts or Alsa - nothing to do with oss) so yeah...

Anyways... I feel stupid.. but yeah, thanks :-)

Cheers
