2004-02-10 03:48:00 | Three times now I've had this box pop up in the middle of my screen saying .... Update Manager (no mention of Microsoft or anyone ese for that matter). It just says update manager has found updates for the following products. Please select the products that you would like to update (there's only one option).... update manager 882kb. Any ideas? I've right clicked on most of it and nothing. It's got a picture of the world and a computer linked to it. It is NOT a Windows Update to my knowlege, I've never seen it before. Mind you, this is a new computer I've only recently had installed, so there's heaps on here I have no idea about.

Do you have a firewall that monitors outward traffic such as ZoneAlarm, Keiro or Agnitum Outpost installed? One of these firewalls will be able to pinpoint down which program is calling home for updates. Also, it would pay to install and run Spybot Search & Destroy and/or Ad-aware 6 to make sure you haven't acquired any spyware or malware that is calling home. |

2004-02-10 06:07:00 | Hi Jen, yes there is a firewall pre-installed on here, but don't ask me about it I have no idea. I ran Ad-aware yesterday and deleted some stuff too. But why doesn't it acutally say what it is or where it's come from when it pops up? I mean Norton and Window update tell you it's them, this is really confusing. I didn't install Zonealarm this time seeing as it already had a firewall included, and someone said they may conflict. Thanks for your suggestion. | Lucy (182) | |
2004-02-10 06:15:00 | The inbuilt WinXP firewall does not stop any outbound traffic - only inbound. So in order to monitor which programs are trying to access the net, you will need a third party firewall installed. If you have a properly setup third-party firewall, you do not need to have the WinXP firewall running. | Jen C (20) | |

2004-02-10 22:28:00 | Found out what it was at long last!! It came on this morning so I did the old ctrl+alt+del bit and it WAS Windows Update Manager after all. Why it doesn't say I have no idea! | Lucy (182) | |
