214008 2004-02-09 11:34:00 Talk about dumb... I was reading up on the net and came across several articles talking about flashing an FX5900 to an FX5950 Ultra.. and that got me wondering... so I tried it...

Anyway, flashing to the Gainward 5950 Ultra bios worked ok, but when I checked under system properties, it reported it as a normal FX5900 Ultra.

I tried flashing back to a FX5900Ultra bios, and it reported it as successful... but this is where the problem started...

My PC refused to POST!!! Uh oh... Put in an old GF2 card, and now works fine... the GF2 that is...

Anyway, the store is taking it back and replacing it as it is under 12months old...

Guess I deserved it... :(

Will you be enquiring about upgrading to a 5950 rather than a replacement?

;-)

214010 2004-02-09 11:40:00 My mate tells me that if the supplier has run out of the 5900Ultras, then they would most likely offer the 5950 as a replacement... i doubt it though! Still a pretty readily available card...

214011 2004-02-09 19:17:00 I'm surprised that they are repairing it, AFAIK most components warrenties ignore you when flashing the bios etc etc...

214012 2004-02-09 19:50:00 Um, I suspect the store hasn't been told exactly how it died ;) Biggles (121)
214013 2004-02-09 21:19:00 Lohsing,

Did you try installing a PCI card into your computer, and setting the video output to that in BIOS? Then, insert the AGP card, and you should be able to start up again.

That way, you can often flash "dead" cards back to life.

Of course, if the computer doesn't even POST with the GFFX 5900 installed, it might not work...

214014 2004-02-09 21:21:00 Yeah... thought about it already, but don't have a spare PCI VGA card... so... oh well, I have a spare GF4Ti around at work so will use that in the meantime...
