214142 2004-02-09 21:37:00 Nothing back from Microsoft or Symantec posts X-( . so last resort...

W-XP-h, MS-Office 2000 Sp1, Athlon kA, 512 RAM

Outlook worked fine until I put Norton firewall on top of Norton (Symantec) System Works 2003. Then Outgoing Emails began to mysteriously disappear, not all, but most of the ones with Attachments. Took weeks to figure out /:|

I uninstalled the firewall. No Change. Uninstalled SW2003, out going Emails became reliable again. However it would not now receive any emails.

I unistalled and reinstalled MS Office (3x), to no avail. :o

Account info was triple checked, and in fact copied into Outlook express, which worked first time. I now receive on OE and send on Outlook for many good reasons.

I think Norton has done something to Outlook I can't change, perhaps in the registry. I used norton on line help to ensure Norton registry has been correctly expunged, and it was.

Any Ideas Out There???

214143 2004-02-09 21:53:00 Is it possible to turn off the email virus scanning (redirect thingy) with nortons?
Also I recall some virus checkers changed incoming mail server to localhost.
Apologies if you have tried these.

214144 2004-02-09 22:08:00 Open up Norton Antivirus and do the following:

Options --> E-Mail --> Untick "Scan outgoing e-mail"

This should sort the problem out, it's a notorious difficulty with Nortons. I also fail to see the point in scanning outgoing e-mail, as if the scanner didn't detect it on the way in, or in resident memory, it's hardly going to find it on the way out.

214146 2004-02-09 22:29:00 WTF:

This may cure the outgoing which is now OK, but not the incoming as per description.

(FYI: I think they do this to stop you broadcasting a virus you may have, without your knowledge and to plonk more advertising in front of recipients.)

214148 2004-02-10 00:10:00 I had assumed that you would have checked your 'incoming' and 'outgoing' mail server settings in Outlook. From memory the incoming mail server gets changed to 'local host'.
Go to Tools | Email accounts | View or change existing email accounts | Change | and there you should see your incoming and outgoing mail server. Check those settings if you haven't already.
Altenatively as outlined earlier......
Open Nortons System Works.
Click on Options | Antivirus | Email | Untick both incoming and outgoing scan.
Mine is NSW 2002 so hopefully it should be similar.

good luck

214149 2004-02-10 01:56:00 Thanx for that, but this only fixes mail that arrives, mine says it gets the mail just fine, it just doesn't get any.

I did try more of the links but nothing in this area.

214150 2004-02-10 01:59:00 Thanks Sam,

Yes the accounts (SMTP & POP) are correct and worked first time in the dreaded O-Express.

I had removed entirely the firewal and virus checker so that shouldn't have any bearing.

It goes to get the mail, says it does, says all is OK, but no mail.

Thanx

214151 2004-02-10 04:30:00 Just use OE then, if has far fewer problems and quirks then Outlook or better still use a non microsoft mail program such as Eudora. Jim B (153)
