214120 2004-02-09 20:58:00 I've developed a wierd problem with Nero 6. I had a full install of Nero working fine - the full suite. Then suddenly it when I tried to use Nero it pops up with a message

"Your Windows version is outdated and Nero cannot be run. Please update your Windows version using the patches available from http://www.nero.com"

So far I've tried the obvious:

1] Updated to latest version.

2] Contacted Nero tech support and been offered 2 different solutions which they were confident would fix the problem - niether did. Namely:

a] Completely uninstall and run a Clean Tool they provided before re-installing with latest versions.

b] Run an update system files package they provided which seems to provide new versions of msvcrt.dll and msvcp60.dll

None of this changed the result one bit. I'm running XP Professional. Somewhere I have introduced a change that has effected one of the files Nero uses. This could be an MS update, or maybe another app with burning abilities, such as MusicMatch of MS Media Player. I'm still in contact with Nero but well, with two strikes so far I'm not overly confident of them fixing the problem. Any thoughts?

214121 2004-02-09 23:26:00 I also run Nero 6 on XP Pro so I hope the disease is not contagious!

Bruce, you mention doing the obvious but omitted to mention one of my "obviouses" which is to try System Restore. It has got rid of several of my "glitches" in the past.

Otherwise, good luck and hope to hear of the eventual solution.

214122 2004-02-09 23:48:00 Hey Bruce,

Why call Nero Tech Support when you have us lot?

Anyway, download the oleupdate (oleupd . exe) from their FTP site, Nero 6 requires updated versions of the OLE files and this sounds like the problem . Their FTP is ftp://ftp6 . nero . com/

It may pay to backup just incase of making problems worse, which is possible when dealing with computers .

214123 2004-02-10 00:31:00 I will try that -- but I did have Nero 6 installed and working fine last year. I hadn't used it for a couple of months so I've done plenty of updates/software additions to my system in the mean time. Hence system restore is not my preferred solution. Biggles (121)
214124 2004-02-10 01:05:00 could it be that you have installed a windows update patch which nero dident like? robsonde (120)
214125 2004-02-10 01:40:00 That's possible. But then you'd think Nero tech support - considering they asked for an received a report of my system including all MS updates installed - would know about it or that it would be a common problem for them if it was that simple. Biggles (121)
214126 2004-02-10 02:16:00 Bruce,

You are asking us at the PF1 team family, to believe that someone else apart from our family (PF1)hopeing that they will know of known problems that affect each and every one of their programs, and give the correct support needed???

In my understanding if that was the case why do we need PF1???? if nothing ever went wrong or someone always new the correct answer would they not have a web site saying how to fix each and every problem computer related???

I have no idea myself how to fix this problem, but some of us at PF1 find that in the past we get help here far more readily than from the actual people who build and supply us with these machines or programs. It seems they havent a clue, and the ones that do no, dont always get to pass it on, they leave instead, for greener pastures.

Maybe there needs to be a little more trust in the world, not saying id trust Microsoft any more than i do though....:D

sorry for the waffle, am of no help to you, ill go back to my hole now.

only things that have helped me with problems of this sort is process of illimination, from last prog on > which becomes first prog off, all trial and error i guess, Updates being a highly likely issue or any other progs you may have installed since last use of Nero.

214127 2004-02-10 02:54:00 It seems that it has been catching other people, Bruce. Even people using wine under Linux. :D The ole-update looks to be the likely fix, though one suggestion found by Google ("your windows version is outdated") was that DirectX9.0b was needed. That's less likely. ;-) Graham L (2)
214128 2004-02-10 03:33:00 have you updated the firmware of the cdwriter if available?

cheers

214129 2004-02-10 03:36:00 Got 9b anyhow. I'll try the OLEupdate fix.

Beetle -- I know I know, and after my experiences with Symantec support for Ghost (my probelm was resolved by someone suggesting I use fdisk to reactivate a partion which worked 100% but which was never suggested by Symantec) I never do expect a company's tech support to solve a problem but dagnabbit, they can jolly well try.
