214663 2004-02-11 09:36:00 Hi, there i just installed Mandrake 9.0 and i want to get onto my MSN account etc how can i go about that, where do i go to download a programme so i can do that MrBeef (342)
214664 2004-02-11 09:47:00 Probably best if you go with amsn.
http://amsn.sf.net

You may need your Mandrake CD's to install tk/tcl packages though :-)

Otherwise, there's Kopete for KDE users, or Gaim is best for GNOME ;-)

There's kmess if none of the above apeal, but I'd suggest you try amsn or kopete :D

Hope this helps

214665 2004-02-11 11:09:00 I'm a GAIM user, but I'd strongly recommend Kopete. segfault (655)
214666 2004-02-11 11:38:00 IIRC, Kopete supports that lil msn User-Pic thingy whatsit.

Not sure of any others that do. Gaim and amsn dont...

Kinda good I s'pose.. Waste of bandwidth.. especially for Dial-up Users :p

214668 2004-02-11 20:35:00 kopete is part of the kdenetwork rpm thats on your CD.

Lets take you thru a thing or two.
Click the K or the Foot (K if you're in KDE, the Foot if you're in GNOME)
Click Run
type:
xterm
Now, a command-line window will appear. The next part depends on if you got the rpm or the tar.gz file.
tar.gz files are like Zip files only slightly better compression IIRC. tar.bz2 files are same :-)
First off, we'll make sure you've got everything installed you need to run amsn before we do anything else. Type:
tar xvzf amsn-0.8.3.tar.gz
If you type:
tar xvzf amsn
then hit [Tab] on your keyboard, it will complete the filename for you :D Cool huh.

Next, type:
cd msn
then type:
./amsn

Now, if the file you downloaded ends in .rpm you should just be able to double-click on it. It will ask you for your root password then it'll install it. a .rpm is like a Self-Extracting EXE file that you can remove later with ease :-)

If it works, post back :-)
If not, then we need to install the tk/tcl packages from your CD.

I hope that didnt throw you in the deep end too much

Cheers

214669 2004-02-12 03:14:00 Hi there, i goto the K then goto run command and type xterm but nothing happens just "ccould not run specified command" MrBeef (342)
214670 2004-02-12 04:10:00 That's okay, just replace xterm with konsole :-)

Then carry on...

214671 2004-02-12 04:47:00 Hi again, okay got into Konsole and typed what you said and this came up

[mrbeef@Jones mrbeef]$ tar xvzf amsn-0.8.3.tar.gz
tar (child): amsn-0.8.3.tar.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

I downloaded the file to /home/mrbeef/documents

Cheers
MrBeef (342)
214672 2004-02-12 05:01:00 That is telling you that you haven't got an asmn-0.8.3.tar.gz file in your mrbeef directory. That is not surprising since you loaded it to mrbeef/documents. :D
Try cd documents then issue the tar command again.
