214578 2004-02-11 07:19:00 I have Windows ME
For some reason my system resource meter is going down to dangerously low levels, even though I have hardly any programs open.
This is happening after I am using IrfanView for half an hour. It starts off OK, then the resource meter levels just go down and a warning to close programs comes on the screen. The levels do not go back up, on closing IrfanView.
Does anyone know why this is happening?

214579 2004-02-11 08:16:00 An explanation may be found on the forum's FAQ section (link at top right of this page) in a post "FAQ #14: Computer runing slower, RAM clutter" by Roofus. Note that it will take a while to load this thread. tommy (2826)
214580 2004-02-11 08:53:00 Thanks Tommy.

The relevant section in that FAQ that you gave me seems to be

>Another factor in system performance slow downs is “memory leaks” >This is where an application uses RAM and slowly uses up more and >more, hence cluttering your RAM; unfortunately the only way to avoid >this is to do a reboot. You tend to notice this when you get to the end >of your day and start imaging that everything is running slower……….. >well it is!

I have just found this program IrfanView and was really enjoying using it to view images, and it is a shame that this means rebooting every half hour. Perhaps they have an upgraded version that I can look for, which will give better results.

214581 2004-02-11 08:56:00 the faq is wrong, a ram scrubber will free up ram. metla (154)
214582 2004-02-11 09:02:00 Thanks metla,
Can you recommend a ram scrubber that someone who is not very clever can use?

214583 2004-02-11 09:02:00 And this is the program you should use. I have tried many of them and this is the best. Either the standard or the Pro version.

214584 2004-02-11 09:06:00 I did use an excellent one back when i ran win98,im actually been waiting for the name of it to jump to the front of my brain.

That process doesn't seem to be working so far...

What i do rememeber about it is that you could either do it all manually or just choose a preconfigred set-up.

meh....maybe someone will throw out a couple names.

214585 2004-02-11 09:15:00 I just had a look at a few at download.com,none jump out as the one i used and i do recall a few of them causing more problems then they fixed.

This one looks worth checking out(mainly because its free and claims not to cause any greif)

download.com.com

Its always a good idea to read the user reviews, which is why download.com is an excellent resource.
