214644 2004-02-11 10:34:00 Yeah, it was mine coz I previewed it and it looked the same...

Closing the tab? What's that supposed to mean?

214645 2004-02-11 11:04:00 Omigod guys.
You mean I have to apologise to Odin now?

Because this is a really weeiirrdd page . What was brief scrolling sideways to read it seems to be getting worse
Or maybe that's my imagination? Anyway, it's still really crappy to try to read.

And if it's only a wee bunch reading this thread, who cares?
But it'd be interesting ( for info for the baby PF1ers ) to know WHY it does it.
Or am I being picky? And yes, it's right off the original topic...

214646 2004-02-11 11:31:00 Laura try this in someone elses thread with out the asterix and spaces bwteen the bracket and begining of the sentence and the end of the paragraph. Then type happily away without putting any breaks in the lines so that they spread right across the page. Copying and pasting nice long URL's has a similar affect (longer than Odins miserable effort I might add). Anyhoo, when you get sick of banging away at the keys just do this (remember not spaces where mine are)-space- [*/pre] and of course leave out the pesky * as well. so it should look like this [pre]pre makes it smaller and b in brackets makes it bolder and don't forget to put the / in front of the terminating pre in the end brackets but just
to stuff you up you don't have to put the / in front of the terminating b, just it's own brackets, but the rest of your post will be bold, remember

Hope that helps

Cheers Murray ;P

214647 2004-02-11 12:04:00 I didnt do anything wrong though?

I think that what happens is if you write a long enough message within pre tags and then start a new line without closing it, then you get that dreaded "long-page syndrome". If you click Reply to my long message and then click Qutoe Origional, you'll see that I closed off the pre tag perfectly fine, there's nothing wrong with my Pre tags. Im pretty sure its just how the forum handles the line-breaks from within pre tags

...Lets see how this works.. Im closing the pre tags now.... Stu... Its closed!

Chill.

214648 2004-02-11 12:05:00 Looks like Im right :-) Chilling_Silently (228)
214649 2004-02-11 12:17:00 Thanks Murray P

(Massages tired arm because of scrolling to read your informative post & then back to find find the Reply button..)

Great info from a helpful feller.
Sadly, I'm not too much the wiser, as it seems you're telling me how not to make this error. But all I did was click on the Reply button....

I'm sure knowing how to fix this will be a good learning curve for my computerised soul.
But why do I have to? Press F1 at least is supposed to be simple.

Surely those other software demons who prompt complaints on this forum are complicated enough for us newcomers to follow without hard-to-read-threads - when we don't understand why they're hard to read?

So where are you now Greg S when I need you?

(He fixed a thread he stuffed up late last year...after a similar conversation ...And he knows what went wrong & how to fix it. Explanations, too)

Come in Greg S.....The very brief & simple version. please.

I remember having this same convserstation last time with you with the why's and how's
of a page going overwidth :)

The only way to fix this is to contact a moderator/admin of PressF1 with the URL's of the
threads and they will edit the post so that it is correctly formatted.

You can find Bruce B's email address in the top "The Rule's ..." post.

The Why's of it is, when someone uses the [ pre ] tag every paragraph (each section of
text when they haven't hit the return key), will display as one long line. Pre tags prevent
the forum auto-line wrapping the post.

The trick to remember is to manually hit "Enter/Return" yourself at the appropriate spot
(normally when the text has filled one line of the reply box so that manual line breaks
are entered).

214653 2004-02-11 20:41:00 Then again...

Maybe a patch is needed to stop this reccuring ?
