2004-02-11 20:59:00 | I have a new geforce 128 5200 card, 1gig of ram, 1.7 CPU and the latest drivers available. I just bought a copy of Halo and it runs like a snail at high speed. Its jerky and slow even with the settings set low but with that sort of power they should be able to be set at the highest settings, I would have thought. There is this gem in the readme which I don't understand "NVIDIA Video Cards and FSAA Modes: You may experience difficulties running Halo using NVIDIA video cards in any of the FSAA modes. If you are having a problem, you should disable the FSAA mode for the NVIDIA video card." I have looked at the setting for the card but cannot spot FSAA. I have scanned the various homepages concerned etc. Any help would be appreciated in sorting this out. K

2004-02-11 22:01:00 | i don't play the game but i understand that its very demanding on hardware. a 1.7 cpu is going to struggle. what sort of cpu is it? turn off all antialising and anistropic filtering. aslo try setting quality to performance. what video driver are you useing ?

2004-02-11 22:12:00 | Im afraid your system wont cut it,and thats becasuse the game is a poorly coded pos that has only done negative things for pc gaming. The performence issuses with it are wide speread and while some report usable fps many people even with much gruntier machines have problems. The card you bought is the budget model, and while it can push most games along at decent clip when paired with a fast cpu i doubt very much you will have much luck with halo. Now,as to performence tweaking. What you need is a little reg entry called coolbits, this will make previously unavable settings in your video card set-up available. This is availablehere www.softpedia.com Once you have downloaded it(takes less then 2 seconds) ricght click on an empty spce on your desktop>properties>settings>advanced>then click on the tab dispaling the name of your video card. There will be a menu down the left hand side of the main window,go thru these and put which ever ones allow it onto Performence

2004-02-11 22:23:00 | rather than enabling coolbits its better to get the manafactures overclocking/tweaking tool. some allow for a broader overclocking range. if one is not advialable then rivatuner is quite good. | tweak'e (174) | |
2004-02-11 23:11:00 | There's variuous tweak guides on the Net avauilble. Here's one (in Word .doc format): members.cox.net I eventually got the game running adequately at 1024x768 (most of the time) on a P4 2.6, 1GB RAM, GeForce4 Ti 4400 128 but certainly it never ran as smoothly I would expect for a game of its type (the original was designed for Xbox remember, with GeForce 3-level graphics power). Personally, I only rate the game as "okay" and wouldn't risk making my system unstable just to run it.

2004-02-11 23:39:00 | Yeah, GeForce 3, 64MB Ram... Musta been re-coded pretty poorly if it struggles on that spec'd PC. I would have to say that the multiplayer aspect of it is excellent, but you just cant beat you and your friend sitting in front of your telly, slogging it out against the Covenant aliens! Its a great game, but you've either gotta tune your graphic detail levels right down, or find some real good tweaks :-) Have a search back through the PressF1, this has been addressed before and there's some links to guides that people have had success with :D Hope this helps Chill.

2004-02-12 00:12:00 | Mine runs reasonably with a 1.1Ghz,384ram and a gf4mx440 64mb. So yours is a much better machine. I remember some people got it to work ok by changing the vsync or something off in the game options. Something like that. But if it can run on a low spec'd xbox then its been very badly coded for the pc if a high spec PC machine can't play it right. Possibly a M$ marketing ploy to make them buy windowsXP, in which is probably only runs on properly.

2004-02-12 01:07:00 | Thks for the replys. Gotta say that theres a variety of opinions around about this and also examples. I have several friends with lower [ or slightly different specs ] than mine and it runs well. I had microsoft/games scan the pc to see if it fitted the min specs and it was waay up the graph. It runs O K on board ship but as soon as I hit the planet surface then it turns to a mushy wading-in-deep-swampy-water type thing. I have done the turning off of anisotropic and antialias with a slight improvement but nothing to leap around about. I'll check out the various links above. Also am d/loading the patch on the ms/games page so that may help. cheers. K

Well, coolbits just enables the features that are already built into the drivers,it gives access to a few more features to enable performence without needing a seperate program running to do so.And i wasn't so much alluding to the overclocking ability but the extra settings as far as Image quality,AA,and anitrospic filters(that spelling cant be right) that are made available. As far as the overclocking ability,on my system i have the scope to turn my memory up to 1.4g,and my core up to 500mhz,cant say i would need a broader range then that,i can quite easily fry my board on a far less overclock... |

2004-02-12 01:31:00 | The reason systems with older cards work better is they ignore all the tasks that they cant do,a g4mx is only directx7 compliant,so will ingore the dx8 and dx9(if the game uses any)effects. the cards running more moden chipsets on the other hand try and run these features and are brought down to their knees. Which is why a fx5200 while suporting the extra features will not give good results, lack of grunt.
