214610 2004-02-11 05:10:00 I have a PC company 450MHz pIII 128M RAM computer with WIN 98SE.
As time went by this machine gave more and more problems - printing failures (HP695C deskjet), lockups on shutdown, DVD playing errors (early samsung DVD drive and ASUS DVD 2000), scanning problems increased from already high levels (Vuego 320U with Mirascan V3.42 through PictureIt express).
I was advised by someone I trusted to do a complete reinstall of everything and at the same time fitted a larger hard drive and ASUS CD-RW drive to back-up data in addition to the DVD drive.
Some software that was initially on the machine I did not get on any disc from the manufacturer and could not replace - generally I found alternatives.
This install of WIN 98SE was rather a problem with several hangups part way through and took me a long time to complete. The system seemed OK at first except it never detected the printer (which works fine on another WIN95 machine). Soon the scanner was never found (now using Mirascan through Ulead Photo expess 2.0SE), it would play no sound from CDs (either drive), and the DVD playing is as flakey as ever.
My skills extend no further and no help of any significance is coming from my former advisor.
What do people recommend I try next??

214611 2004-02-11 05:22:00 The hang-ups during installation indicate to me that there is a possibility of a faulty power supply or memory module. Maybe you could expand on what precisley happened. Install of Windows really shows up any weaknesses as it gives the PC a hard time.

Maybe try downloading and running a memory test program from here (www.webattack.com) Although not 100% guaranteed to pick up all faults, it does damn well.

214612 2004-02-11 05:28:00 Have you got and installed the latest win 98 drivers for your motherboard and other hardware plus the various updates for 98, IE & OE (& Office if your running it)

If the memory checks out of and you can stomach it try reinstalling it all again. dave all your important stuff in a folder on the new/spare drive. Back up the really important stuff off system, eg, CD.

214613 2004-02-11 06:19:00 thanks, I am running IE6.0 OE is also a recent version. WIN98 has recent service pack update. BIOS is the most recent I could find (but still elderly) if that's what you refer to for the motherboard. 2ndgregg (5254)
214614 2004-02-11 08:23:00 The memory test progam Phoenix recommended found no errors in 2 passes of tests numbers 1 to 7 over about an hours running time with the default settings. I had wondered if the RAM would check out faulty as it often used to report as 64MB instead of 128MB before I reloaded everything, although this problem dissappeared afterward. 2ndgregg (5254)
214615 2004-02-11 08:32:00 an hour?

214616 2004-02-13 22:51:00 Well, now it has run a lot longer and still no errors are detected.
Any other possibilites to check??
