214903 2004-02-12 15:25:00 Is coaxtial cable faster than fiber optic?I've hardly heard of coaxial cable. Are there any places in nz that uses coaxial cable? yingxuan (3330)
214904 2004-02-12 15:58:00 Hi ying

To inform you:

Optical is the fastest. It also has huge bandwidth capabilities. Unfortunatly, it is also the most expensive.

Coax is most certainly slower.

214905 2004-02-12 17:42:00 I think the bigger questions is why are you wanting to compare the two?

is it for dvd players? is it for communications?

My home network uses coaxial cable as a network medium.
Coaxial is slower than fibre optic.

Cheers

214908 2004-02-12 19:11:00 i think its 100m before a repeater Budda (2736)
214909 2004-02-12 19:11:00 optical is the backbone for large fast data transfer coaxial is used in the last mile to enter the home etc used also for cable tv and broadband internet slower but cheaper kiwibeat (304)
214910 2004-02-12 19:23:00 The cool thing about fibre optic is that computers can still not process binary from light to binary in terms of electrical current fast enough (i.e. virtually the speed of light) so theres still a lot more potential in fibre!

Around 185m for thinnet 50ohm cable (the stuff I use) 10Base2

Around 500m for thicknet for backbones(requiers a transceiver and interface card with AUI port)

Just every TV aerial in the country almost (the round cable is co-axial).
