| 214821 | 2004-02-12 06:29:00 | Hi there . I just recently installed Mandrake 9 . 0 and i was about to install tl/tkl or whatever packages and i when to Logout and such, it went back to the user selection screen and i chose shutdown - halt it did all its shutting down and the computer powered off . Now when i turned it back the compaq bios came up with something about Jumper settings and something about Unix . I have 2 hdds and they were all working perfectly . If i take the drive with Linux out the seagate 6 . 4 U8 hdd boots and then it gets to flashing cursor _ and then just 07 floods half the screen and then doesnt do anything . If i have both HDDs in says Disk Controller Failure check jumper settings etc . So i check and im damned sure ive got them all in the right position . My computer is a Compaq Deskpro EP celeron 500mhz with 192 mb ram . Seagate 6 . 4gb U8 series and a Quantum Fireball 10 gig . Please help, cheers |

HTH that's about as far as I can take you on the subject. Hang around and someone will pop in shortly. Cheers Murray P |

| 214824 | 2004-02-12 09:38:00 | If i take the linux hdd off (the main seagate is master already) it does the _ blinking then 07070707070707070707070707070707070707070707070707 07070707070707070707070707070707070707070707070707 07070707070707070707070707070707070707070707070707 0707070707 I also took my cd-rom off and then put the quantum as master on the secondary ide, but still no luck |

| 214825 | 2004-02-12 10:16:00 | Hi there, i have double checked all my jumpers and then put it back in and the compaq bios doesn even recognise the quantum. It recognises the seagate but then it does all the 07's | MrBeef (342) | ||
| 214826 | 2004-02-12 10:43:00 | The 07s are from the linux bootleader (LILO). IIRC its hapening because the main part of LILO was installed on the second drive, and it cant find it. For the drive jumpers, if you are using cable select set it to master&slave. |

I have the jumpers how they were before i shut it down but it still doesnt work, the linux drive doesnt even show up in the compaq bios. I will try cable select when i get home from school today (to tired right now) |

| 214828 | 2004-02-13 03:06:00 | Okay, i put both drives back onto the cable andf set both as Cable Select, but still no luck there error is 1782-Disk controller failure . It reads the windows one but as someone earlier said all the 07 is the bootloader trying to do its stuff . When both are on and not cable select the HDD thinking light is always on, and under the quantum a little light flashes once or twice . So im stuffed as to what is wrong aye |
MrBeef (342) | ||
| 214829 | 2004-02-13 03:18:00 | That 1782 error probably means that both drives are trying to respond at once . So it's not a CS system . :D You can tell by the cable . There's one wire missing to one of the drive connectors . If the "HDD thinking" light is always on, that "almost always" means that a drive's connector is upside down . If a little light under the Quantum flashes a few times, it's probably the other drive which has the cable flipped . Make sure . Usually the stripe on the cable indicates pin1 . That should be on the power connector side of the 40 pin connector on the drives . |

| 214830 | 2004-02-13 03:34:00 | Just now i took both hdds out and made the bios think there was no hdds, then put seagate back in and it recognised that and then booted and then it started saying L 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 etc reallllly slowly . And serious problem now, i took quantum out and then looked at all the pins and at the far end of the ide connector place 2 pins were bent right down :| So i am in the delicate process of straighting them out with a screw driver and tweezers . But before i shutdown from linux it all worked perfectly why the sudden cock up after the shutdown |
