215144 2004-02-13 22:54:00 first of all the missing file is in the temp folder which means the odds are you either had a program not install correctly (what was the last program you installed before this happened?), or more commanly its part of spyware/trojen/virus.

what did the adaware/spybot find?

what is listed in startup? 9 times out of 10 it will give a clue to whats happened. the list is not that long it can't be posted here.

215145 2004-02-14 01:28:00 Thanks for your help guys.
Firstly this is my Father-inlaws PC.
He gave it to me to sort out a few probs he created.
It is a stock standard Pavilion 6700 running on 98me.
He has heaps of unsaved files all over it otherwise I would have reformated & started again.
I ran the recovery disc & reinstalled the OS.
This sorted all of the probs except this startup prompt.
I have updated his 2003 Nortons and checked for bugs, none found.
The startup items are as follows:

TaskMonitor
Systray
LoadPowerProfile
ScanReg
KeyboardManager
Tweak UI
ccApp
ccRegVfy
*StateMgr
ccEvMgr
ScriptBlocking

As I said earlier I have started with only the 3 top items & the warning still come up.
I don't have access to any other diagnostic software.

215146 2004-02-14 02:12:00 run regedit and search for C:\windows\temp\net\net.js then delete that enrty. don't forget to backup the registry first.

otherwise try a registry cleaner.

what was the orginall problems?

215147 2004-02-14 07:04:00 Run search in reg edit, nothing.
Have tried Tony Arts & Jouni Vuorio Reg Cleaners.
The original prob before I started:
No help files & this startup warning.

215148 2004-02-14 07:37:00 if you havn't done so give adaware/spybot a run.

also try hijackthis and see if it picks up any werid entries.

i assume you have searched autoexec, win.ini etc.

do you get the error when doing a clean boot? if no then enable config, autoexec one at a time untill it does if the error. that should narrow the search down a bit.

215150 2004-02-14 10:04:00 Found adaware & spybot on sept 03 PCW Disc.
Gave them a run as you say, both cleared some dubious stuff, but diddn't help.
Can't find an autoexec.bat file on M.E.
And sysedit wont open.
Win.ini looks normal.
Error comes up regardless of what kind of boot.
Comes up as the desktop appears but before the icons & Task bar.

Thanks for your help
Checked out your site, like your car.

215151 2004-02-14 23:54:00 I tried your sugestion & it altered the warning message.
It's now telling me something is wrong with the file.
This remedy would only work until someone cleared the temp folder anyway.

215152 2004-02-15 00:04:00 I agree with you & if you have been following my postings you will see I have been trying to find what the app is but are not having much luck.
I have tried reinstalling IE6 but the system will not exept it for some reason, maybe that is a clue.

215153 2004-02-15 00:51:00 seeing as ie won't reinstall it sounds like you have a hijack/spyware.

did you try this...

f you're getting an error that states "cannot find script file C:\windows\temp\net.js..." or similar you can try editing launch.ini and deleting everything under the package list. Then do a search for lfbnk.dat and edit it. Remove all references to net.js. Be sure to leave any references to internet.js alone, though.

no idea on if it works tho.

>I don't have access to any other diagnostic software

what do you mean exactly?

>Can't find an autoexec.bat file on M.E.

i thought you said It is a stock standard Pavilion 6700 running on 98me. i take you have winME not win98se ??
