2013-04-01 04:10:00 | PCW April Mag has a great headline which must be an April Fools joke. Get your PC humming 12 performance-boosting tweaks for any system. 1. Clean the case, keys & display. Cleaning the dust out of heat sinks, fans etc in some cases can result in slight improved performance due to lower temps, but cleaning the keyboard and monitor wont. 2. Backup your data Doesnt increase performance unless you remove the files off your hard drive. PCW Mag suggests installing Crashplan software. 3. Guard against Malware PCW Mag recommends installing AVG Free. LOL, yeah right, that will work and increase performance. 4. Update your software Well they got one right, keeping a system up to date can of course increase performance, but it can also bog it down. PCW Mag suggests installing Secunia Personal Software Inspector. 5. Organise your files Doesnt increase system performance by putting all your files in folders etc. PCW Mag suggests installing DropIt software 6. Toss out the charf PCW suggests installing SpaceSniffer, Decrapifier, Revo Uninstaller, CCleaner. I would call that tossing in the charf!! 7. Encrypt your private data Doesnt increase system performance. PCW Mag suggests installing TrueCrypt. 8. Change your passwords Doesnt increase system performance. PCW recommends you use a programme called KeePass. 9. Optimise startup Got that one right, but not for recommending WinPatrol software 10. Organise your inbox Doesnt increase system performance. 11. Automate Everything Putting everything on a schedule doesnt increase system performance 12. Defrag your drive Finally got another right that will actually help with system performance. So people, please go and install Crashplan AVG Secunia Personal Software Inspector Dropit SpaceSniffer Decrapifier Revo Uninstaller CCleaner Truecrypt KeePass And WinPatrol as recommended, and give your system a performance boost!! And I would personally like to thank PCW Mag for keeping me in a job.

2013-04-01 05:25:00 | Another performance boost edition?? Why is the mag still being published? This is why I gave up it it. It was the same thing over and over, they kept reccomending useless crap like norton, and they invaded with Apple crap.

2013-04-01 05:41:00 | And just in case someone thinks Iantech was banned for this post - he was not. The reason for that was Mods take a dim view of personal insults and insulting a Moderator (or anyone) in your profile title is not acceptable. | Jen (38) | |
2013-04-01 05:42:00 | Organising your inbox can help with the performance of a desktop email client, so at a stretch you could give them that one | Greven (91) | |

Thought it would have been spotted before now. Anyway back on topic, never can really figure out why anyone would want to install programs that always run on startup to increase performance - the very programs running suck performance in the first place. One that does more good is Free, comes with every version of windows -- Open msconfig, and disable everything that doesn't HAVE to run on startup, common ones are adobe, iTunes and many more that don't come to mind right away. :) |

2013-04-01 18:37:00 | The trouble with publishing Tripe like that is the Magazine looses all credibility and its infinitely easier to loose credibility than it is to gain it. That along with the Moderation Policies set out (see head sticky) which for the most part rely on a non existent law, leads one to think that Fairfax have had enough and PC World (NZ) along with this Forum is heading for extinction. Pity really, as it was a good Magazine and Forum.
