Shattering news - I didn't believe it when it popped up.

Hopefully they managed to survive. I don't really know what else to say except I feel for the daughter. To loose both parents in one incident like that must be dreadful :(

1334646 2013-03-30 10:41:00 I couldn't believe it either when my friend linked me to the 2degrees website.

Shocking.

1334647 2013-03-30 11:59:00 Thats were the alcohol baron died a few years ago in his helicopter. Got clagged in and flew into the hill. Paul Homes got caught near there as well and just about met his maker. Personaly I fly the other side of Pirongia can be like being in tumble drier with the lee turbulence but at least you can see. Turn right at that funny hill. prefect (6291)

Wasn't he about 20nm off shore?

Yes they were, out by a place called gannet rock/island.
:)

1334651 2013-03-30 21:18:00 Something is real strange about this one.

Why did both engines fail for a start?

Then, given the search teams reported perfect weather, why did he ditch in the sea so far off shore? I’m assuming he wasn’t “wave hopping” and my understanding is that those things glide OK as long as you have height which I assume he would have had given he left Ardmore heading for Timaru.

I guess we’ll get an Air Accident Report in two or three year’s time.

1334652 2013-03-30 22:09:00 Did both engines fail ? The aircraft a Beechcraft Baron has 2 engines and is capable of flying on one engine and the odds of both engines failing at once is like 1 in 1000. Now the only reason for both engines to fail which has happened before in planes with more than one engine is contaminated fuel. I think something more sinister has happened which I'm not prepared too speculate on. Trev (427)
1334653 2013-03-30 22:16:00 I will speculate just as the CAA will later if they dont find a definite cause.
Probably lost an engine and stalled. Twin engine light aircraft are not much safer than light single engined ones and twice as prone to engine failure. Shown time and time again clowns dont keep the air speed up on a turn on one engine.

You're probably right . I'm thinking he lost an engine, and tried to gain altitude while at the same time turning toward land, and went below VMC - minimum control speed . That speaks of the instinctive reactions of a low time inexperienced pilot . That the aircraft "disappeared" off the radar indicates he was either at low altitude or in a high rate of descent .

But this is conjecture and does nothing to help those the couple left behind cope with it .
