1334268 2013-03-27 03:54:00 Hmmm. Still requires a user to activate it by installing and running an app (rather than automagically invading and executing).

There is only one app I have installed that didn't come via the Play Store (Swype) - all the rest of my apps are installed after some investigation/research and and reading of reviews. This is the case with 'recommended-by-friends' apps too.

People never learnt a lesson when running windows, their will take less notice of a phone

1334270 2013-03-27 04:16:00 Meh, it's a lot of FUD still. It's social engineering, not the fault of Android.

If I call into a Call Center and say "Hey I'm just looking for John Doe, he's Ext 3997, could you put me through? No, he doesn't exist on that? Hmm that's odd. OK could you put me through to his Mobile please, 021 123 456" and you then transfer me through to that Cellphone number, that's not the fault of the phone system is it?

Nothing to see here people, moving right along...

But different story if it was iOS or WP8?

1334272 2013-03-27 04:24:00 Potentially, yes, though I could say "Go download XXX from the App Store, its FREE" and people would. Nevermind if it's legit or malicious or has a hidden function that occasionally still slips through even Apples manual process. Besides, that's not the first trojan, it's complete BS. You can write an App to do the aforementioned real easy, I could send it to you no stress and then just convince you to install it. Same for Windows, same for Linux, same for Mac OS, same for Facebook apps... Chilling_Silence (9)
1334273 2013-03-27 04:39:00 A little healthy skepticism is required in all things.... :) johcar (6283)

You've just shot yourself in the foot with those comments, by your own admission if someone wrote something and it has "Nasty Side effects" and they convinced others its OK to install then there would be trouble.

You only have to look on social media sites, people link to all sorts of infected software or sites, many simply cant resist clicking or agreeing to various things without knowing what they are.

Bet you anything you like If I posted a link to an infected site saying don't click this its infected but it has awesome content, someone would click it to see.

PS: Before you ask to do it - its against forum rules.

1334276 2013-03-27 05:14:00 Chill is right though, it's (terrible) social engineering. There's no inherent flaw from the fact it's android. The Error Guy (14052)
