2013-03-24 21:13:00 | I have a Zinwell Digital Terrestrial Receiver, ZMT-630HD . The majority of the time it works very well and I have no problems . But occasionally it switches itself off . That usually happens overnight so it is not too much of a problem, I just switch it on again . Unfortunately, if I am away and want to record a programme, it will sometimes switch off and so the recorder records fresh air . Does anyone know why it switches off and is there anything I can do to stop it doing that? I have had a look through the user's manual and have searched on Google but can find no reference to the problem . I am hoping there is someone who has a solution for me . Thanks so much .

2013-03-25 00:21:00 | If the Zinwell is the same generic decoder as the Hardly Normal Loranz and the Warehouse models, plus a few others I have seen (easy to identify by the identical back panels and part of the circuit board visible through the ventilation slots, then yes, they do appear to turn themselves off at random. It may depend on whether you have set it up to update its software at regular intervals, because it does seem to shut down after that event. Cheers Billy 8-{) Just checked the image on the web and it sure looks the same!

2013-03-25 00:44:00 | If it's not faulty hardware (as prefect said -most likely bad caps) or a brown out, then it's probably sotware related. Try updating the firmware and as per Billy's advice, disable any auto update features. I don't think it's a bad capacitor though, otherwise it would switch off under load when watching it. | The Error Guy (14052) | |
2013-03-25 01:13:00 | Or the expensive solution - Get a TiVo or other dvr with built in decoder. Mines been trouble free for 2 years now and I often see them on special around $200 | dugimodo (138) | |
2013-03-25 02:30:00 | I've had four or five Loranz replacements out of HN, they were clapping out at a great rate . I finally found the answer myself, it seems there was a batch drawing too much current and when I measure the load, it was 50% higher than my other (reliable) Loranz . The heatsink (as seen through top vents) was getting very hot indeed and would exceed 80 degrees C within 15 minutes of switch on (as measured with an infrared laser-guided thermometer) even with free-flow ventilation, and the current drain/wattage was well outside spec . When I took that information to HN they just took a new one off the shelf and gave it to me instead of the usual two weeks or so wait while the service department confirmed . They all seem to lock out on rare occasions too, refusing to restart via the remote or the on switch, but they always restart automatically if you unplug and replug . For all that, they seem to work OK, and you can record to a USB stick or introduce your own video via USB Cheers Billy 8-{)

2013-03-26 01:04:00 | Thanks for your comments and suggestions, everyone, especially you, Billy. I had a look through the manual and I could not see where I could turn off the automatic updates, if that is what it is doing, so although that sounds plausible that may not be the case here. I can't see anything that allows you to update the firmware either. The only possibility available is the option to return the unit to the factory default and I am not certain if I should do that. If I do, does that mean that I will need to set up all the channels again? While that is not difficult, I wonder what other things may be undone? I have placed my hand on top of the unit and it is much hotter than one would expect, not quite unbearable, but getting that way. Do you think that I should return it for a replacement?
