1334145 2013-03-28 03:53:00 Which phone issue?

The talk about firmware and other factors that may need tech support to get the phone back on working and it may be a lengthy process.

In the next month we are re-evaluating out ISP. Snap is a bit more. So .. maybe Telecom's UFB, Orcon ADSL or UFB or Telstraclear's $82 deal. The VDSL looks a bit more expensive too.

1334146 2013-03-28 04:00:00 The phone itself functions, but if the router is prone to restarting under load, then naturally you drop calls. The firmware issues, while not something *everybody* will come up against, a subset of users will no doubt find it incredibly frustrating. Chilling_Silence (9)
1334147 2013-03-28 04:07:00 Thanks, I was just on the Orcon site, do they still provide traditional landline or does the Genius box replace it all?

Could you advise about the Telecom fiber option and a few other options? Looking at up to $95/mo and we use 40GB but could deal with 30GB . I'm sorta thinking for about the same price why not go UFB .

1334148 2013-03-28 04:09:00 No physical landline, just the VoIP through Genius. Chilling_Silence (9)
1334149 2013-03-28 05:54:00 At the end of the day, the reliability of the Genius/VOIP phone depends upon the reliability of the modem and the internet connection. If you want maximum reliability then the PSTN conventional phone line will be superior.

I have lost internet connection hence phones quite a number of times since going to Genius. Usually a reboot will cure the problem, occasionally the problem has persisted several hours before the VOIP phone connection has authenticated.

All in all I have had more downtime with Genius in one year than in 35 years of PSTN.

1334152 2013-03-28 06:50:00 Another niggle about the Genius is when VOIP has not authenticated, but the internet connection light is on, the modem GUI says "Modem WAN connection is successful you can surf the internet ". It is a lie, a damned lie :) The internet cannot be surfed until VOIP comes up. I cant even email Orcon to say there is a problem. Terry Porritt (14)

My temptation to join Orcon is waning.

Is location likely to be a factor? Terry in Lower Hutt seems to have had more than his share of problems yet I'm in Ellerslie and apart from a speed issue that was rectified speedily, I have had no problem with Orcon Genius and or VOIP whatsoever.
