A little project i have in my future, Focusing on the ASUS e35m1-m PRO my dad bought me before he died.

I would like the system to focus on Storage and 4xMultiseat

obviously going to use linux (windows and a thirdparty multiseat solution would only have its appeal if i was working with an i7)

the harddrives alone costing almost $1800

i know its not going to be a gaming rig, not even a contender for SteamOS. it will be something 4 people can watch videos on, browse the web, youtube, facebook. all the while hosting up a vast media collection, documents, email, personal website etc, and probably have quite a lot of fun emulating MANY old systems.

there are a lot of ports; 28 USB, 3 of which are internal and 6 of which are USB3; 2 6pin firewire400 ports; 14 SATA ports, 2 of which are eSATA; this is designed to be a central hub of computing activity. one box for my entire house hold.
2 sets of card readers is bound to come in handy

enough usb for mouse, keyboard, headset, webcam for each user ( 16 ports gone right there) and PLENTY of ports left over for many other devices to be attached, gamepads (gotta love emulation),printerscanner, charge cables, etc

The RAIDs

3 drive SSD Raid0, 120GB drives pricespy.co.nz $140 each
2 drive HDD raid1, Hotswap 2.5" 1TB 2.5" drives; 2 drives located off site; 4 drives total pricespy.co.nz $140 each ; 7200rpm
5 drive HDD Raid5. 4TB drives, 5+ year warranties pricespy.co.nz $336 each ; 7200rpm
2 Optical Drives, bluray/DVD $90/45
2 eSATA front+rear

tl;dr

over the top? is there a linux that makes multiseat easy?
hopeful this inspires someone.

1356471 2013-10-19 14:35:00 i can't be give pause to the notion that there may be more than enough usb ports and the USB PCI card is wasteful. (not to mention the internal port is shared with an external port, ew)

without it we have 19 external usb ports, 2 internal

+4x4port USB hubs attached at rear IO, 1 per user (makes assigning devices easier) a total of 31+2

this leaves 15+2 usb ports for various devices along with freeing a PCI slot. and suggestons on what to use it for? was thinkgin TV tuner or FM transmitter. tv transmitter would be cool

my earlier calculations were incorrect.

a hdaudio Y splitter will also come in handy mirroring the 2 front mic/heaphone jacks.

my current case is suitable for this project and its 4th 5.25" drive bay would allow for a fan controller. however with only 5 backplanes in use (2xUSB, GPU, SATA1, SATA2, TV/FMTUNER)

this fan controller looks ideal pricespy.co.nz
plenty of sensors for the raid arrays

how much power are these many drives in raid going to consume?

what to use the last slot for i wonder?

ultimately these modifications makes the rear of the pc decidedly rear and the front very tidy. accessing rear firewire/esata wont be the easiest

1356472 2013-10-20 05:37:00 To answer the last question, post #1 www.userful.com

I've done multiseat with Windows when playing about one day - but never with Linux. ( have a look through that site: :)

For Windows based, I actually used MS's Multiseat software, there is also softxpand (www.miniframe.com) Downloaded it, but never tried it.

4 PCs in one; 4 displays

kinda like a mainframe

1356475 2013-10-21 21:27:00 Each to his own I guess, personally, I dont think a budget dual core going to be much fun for 4 PCs, Id rather use the system as a media
File server with maybe VDI Virtual machines for tablet connectivity...however let us know how you go.

1.6ghz dual core with 2 directx11 GPUs

i remember how hard i used to push my 1.9ghz athlonXP 2600+ barton back in the day.

this is more than enough for web browsing, a software raid and watching videos.

even with multiple users.

and considring the unique for factor it definitely wasnt budget. the board cost ~$300

just gotta figure out how to consistently offload video processing to the gpus

1356477 2013-10-21 22:51:00 maybe i am open to using windows instead of linux. i have downloaded windows multipoint server 2011

www.microsoft.com

consider with adequate hardware and license up to 20 clients are supported with one host, i am sure my hardware is more than capable for 4 clients.

an i7 would be enough for 20.

it really doesnt take much.

1356478 2013-10-23 22:25:00 ive got a problem
