1355997 2013-10-13 21:37:00 Hi all,

I am using my recently acquired smartphone more and more of late, but internet/online banking is not what I dare install, seeing as there is no antivirus apps that I can see

Can anyone comment on this and suggest an answer, so I can bank with a smartphone?

My desktop is used less and less of late-but certainly used for banking etc

1355998 2013-10-13 21:41:00 Don't bother. As long as you stick to apps installed from its store you'll be fine. pcuser42 (130)

Sound advice. I agree, the AV stuff is largely a hoax across all 3 popular mobile platforms (Windows Phone / Android / iOS), it's not worth bothering with.

Totally agree, and all the major banks now have iOS and Android banking apps that are free.

That is the sort of thing that worries me , 'legit' apps getting access to everything on the ph,
slurping
eg apps accessing contacts, camera, email, photos , apps can have the ability to send txt's to your contacts & take over the camera & mic for no good reason(not sure that any do, yet)

My Android ph is clean now, after a factory reset/restore. I got quite a shock will all the ads after in 1st installed just a few games from the app store.
If it was a PC with all those ads popping up, it wouldn't be tolerated & would be called out as malware , not just accepted as it is with Android etc

1356003 2013-10-14 21:37:00 Depends, many free apps and games are add supported and it's in the fine print somewhere generally so you've technically agreed to them.
It does bother me a bit when apps want access to all those features and it seems unjustified, why does a map app need access to my contacts for example, but I'm fairly trusting of official bank apps.

I don't have any pop up adds on any of my 3 android devices and have installed plenty of free apps, a few have adds within the app itself but that's not so bad. Maybe you just need to be a bit selective, always a good Idea to read any negative comments to see what issues others have with an app.

1356004 2013-10-14 23:16:00 As mentioned in the other thread, apps can no longer display Ads in the notification bar:
play.google.com

To find out more about the ad networks on your phone that are used for displaying ads within apps, you can use Lookout Ad Network Detector:
play.google.com

No virus, no malware, just Ads... and a storm in a teacup.
