2013-03-27 20:34:00 | Billy Jnr is in the UAE with his band. The passport of one band member will expire before they leave, next stop France. The member obtained a new passport, which was then couriered to our address for on-shipment to UAE as we were sending a small parcel of goodies (and his own family are unreliable). The parcel was duly sent to the UAE with the PP listed as personal papers. There was an issue over couriering to a PO Box (UAE does not have a postal delivery service for street addresses) but that was resolved when I told them to check their system etc. There was a lot of discussion amongst the staff about all of this because there were very few customers around at the time. The parcel was duly sent on its way (thrown into the bag) and then I overheard one staff member tell another (by way of further education) "you can't sent passports overseas by express courier, they get sent back". Well, the PP is on its way and might possibly bounce back if detected, but the question is: How are you supposed to get a passport to a person already overseas if you can't courier it? A second question that comes to mind is whether or not the new NZ passports contain an embedded RFID chip so that they can be detected during mail processing? So far so good, Track and Trace shows that it at least got out of NZ ok. Cheers Billy 8-{)

2013-03-27 20:39:00 | Isn't there an NZ, Aust or British Mission somewhere in the area who the PP could have been sent to? | Bryan (147) | |
2013-03-27 20:48:00 | As Bryan said, usually this sort of thing is dealt with through the Consulate. It just becomes part of that day/week's dispatch. | DeSade (984) | |
2013-03-27 21:41:00 | I overheard one staff member tell another (by way of further education) "you can't sent passports overseas by express courier, they get sent back". On the NZPost site there's a mention * Due to circumstances that are outside our control, we are not accepting: parcels sent to Russia using International Express Courier (documents can still be sent to Russia using this service) until further notice. passports sent to India using International Express Courier until further notice. so it doesn't seem to be a blanket ban on passports.

2013-03-27 22:56:00 | I'm surprised they managed to travel with less than 6 months left on the passport, usually they don't let that happen. As far as sending it via the dip bags to the embassy, that *should* have been how it was handled (unless circumstances prevented it) If he's under a bit of pressure or it gets bounced back to NZ the said member should find the nearest Embassy and talk the matter over with the chaps there. The problem with embassy mail is if it goes via the dip bags, it could take ages to actually get there. If it goes by SP (secure post) which it most likely would then it would be in the Embassy within two days of posting.

2013-03-28 04:04:00 | RE dip bags, depends which one it goes in . There are SP bags for all the actual embassy documents (which the passport *should* go in) and there are the general dip bags which are pretty much passed around on a "next available flight" basis . They usually carry things like Diplomatic/Non Priority mail, parcels and personal mail for the Embassy staff etc . If the Embassy processes the Passport it almost certainly will go in the right SP bag, BUT if you just walk into the NZ comission here and ask them to send it to the NZ Embassy they might just put it in the standard dip post bag . Just in case you should mention to the staff that it is a NZ Passport that needs to be sent to the UAE ASAP . Just so they don't accidentally get it in the wrong bag . No shed tears if it did go the wrong way, it just wouldn't be as fast . Being the UAE though it wouldn't take more than a week or so anyway . China's dip bag on the other hand
