1473166 2020-11-25 21:27:00 Last week I bought the above cable -brand DynaMix.
I connected it between my 2 laptops .
I was expecting the second laptop to show up in Windows Explorer in the same way as a USB Memory stick does.

There was nothing to show that the second laptop was connected as a Device.

I must be misinterpreting something.
Can someone please advise me why my expectation was wrong.
Secondly is there a "fix"?

thanks

Neil

1473169 2020-11-25 22:13:00 You cant simply use standard USB Cables. What you need is referred to as a USB bridged cable , USB File Transfer Cable, sometimes called a USB networking cable, all the same thing just different names.

There is a Section (often a rectangle type Block) that has the electronics in it that allow the transfer.

Similar to this, the "block" may be part of the actual USB plug:

10595 10596

Another way is if you have a Spare Router or use an existing , just plug both computers into the ports, allow sharing and away you go, dont need internet as the router only is connecting computers Via IP Addresses.

1473170 2020-11-26 07:40:00 Thanks Bryan and Wainui

Looks to me that the USB Bridged cable is easiest.
Years ago i had a cable with Software -Easy Data Transfer but the connections art each end were different.

I shall look at PB Tech for the Bridged one

Thanks

1473174 2020-11-26 19:03:00 You can try Searching Google for USB Transfer Cable New Zealand. PBtech have this -- You will find that are not as cheap as a Std USB Cable as they have the extra hardware.

www.pbtech.co.nz They are USB3, You can get others with USB3 to USB -C

If you're in no hurry then try Someplace like Aliexpress, might take a month to get here but a lot cheaper around $15.

1473175 2020-11-27 06:06:00 You could just use a direct connection with an ethernet cable, you just have to manually set the network addresses if you are not using a router as Wainui suggested. As long as both PCs are gigabit ethernet a straight ordinary cable is fine. For older standards you need a crossover cable.

Here's a guide, not a fan of the narrator voice but there are plenty others if you search them if this one doesn't work.

Nothing wrong with using USB, just offering an alternative.

Edit: Also note if this is all you use the ethernet ports for it'll only need setting up once.
