| 1477555 | 2021-06-02 23:40:00 | "I'm an oldy and still think in inches and feet. Stuff the French ideals on metric!" Same here, and it makes things easier to relate to in the real world in terms of distance for instance. One inch, the the average forefinger distance between 1st and 2nd finger joint, one foot, 12 of the finger joint measurement, one yard, three feet is one yard, 1760 yards is one mile, 25,000 miles in circumference of the Earth, 250,000 miles is distance to the moon, 93 million miles is distance to the Sun, all intuitive and locked into reality, unlike the metric system. In other words you can go from very familiar sizes to unfamiliar but important sizes for things like the size of the Earth or distance to the moon etc in your imagination. Just because the metric system makes sense in terms or increments of 10 is not the be all and end all of relating from the real world to imagination and back again it just makes it easier to move between units which only the dummies have problems with anyway. I hate the metric system, not the least because it is so boring. Another instance is if you ask anyone what does a Newton of force feel like, which you need to know if you are an engineer, they can't tell you, actually it's what an apple feels like in the palm of your hand. |

Ken Yep and if you are following a plane on Flighradar24 you will find (as you say) Height is in Feet, Speed is in Knots, but distance is in Kilometers. Then if we go to a Weather Station the Wind Speed is in Knots, MPH, or Metres per second, could be anything. So we give up and go fishing only to find the depth of the water is in Fathoms. Bugger it, go to the pub and have a Pint. |

| 1477564 | 2021-06-03 07:21:00 | Most science based industries in America now use the metric system so it is changing but very, very slowly. Canada is fully metric much more so than the UK, this means that America will eventually have to fully change. | gary67 (56) | ||
