215533 2004-02-14 20:35:00 Dial up screen appears when I boot up - slap bang in the middle of my desktop. Its not an enormous problem as it is easy to get rid of it but I do find it irritating. I use Windows98 and Outlook Express. Any advice on getting rid of it and an explanation of why it happens would be appreciated.
By the way I am an old so and so. I find some of the letters from the younger generation (I think), so full of spelling mistakes, appalling English, lack of precis etc that I am unable to understand them.
If you are one of these youngsters replying please be kind - keep it simple.

215534 2004-02-14 20:50:00 Did it just start happening? Go start - run - msconfig, and see what is in your startup folder. Best to change to selective start up and remove the tick from anything looking suspicious. Or could be IE checking for updates. If it has only just appeared, run AdAware.

215535 2004-02-14 20:54:00 One of the programs that is starting when Windows starts is trying to dial. So the first thing to do is to identify what programs are starting automatically. If you go to Start|Run and type in msconfig, you will get a window with a series of tabs, one of which is "startup". That contains a list of everything that is set to start when Windows starts. If you post a list of all the entries that are checked, we can go from there.

Obvious suspects would be Outlook Express and Internet Explorer, or a virus checker.

Hope this helps,
