215536 2004-02-14 20:09:00 The article in the mag about top end grpahics card was great, but out of my price range.
I'm currently in the process of designing my own system, and have come to choosing a graphics card.
The place where I will be getting the card from has a range of cards available and I'm not sure which is best.
Here are my options.
Note that prices are exlcuding GST.

Asustek A9600XT/TVD/128, ATI Radeon 9600XT/128MB DDR
$398

Asustek V9570/TD, GeForce FX5700, 256MB DDR
$379

Gigabyte (GV-N59X128D), GeForce FX5900XT, 128MB DDR
$370

Gigabyte (GV-R96X128D), ATI Radeon 9600XT, 128MB DDR
$248

With price not being a factor to me, I would like advice as to which one of these is going to provide me with the best graphics.

Thanks

215537 2004-02-14 20:14:00 Just a little extra information. If it's relevant, I dont know.

The system this card will be used on will be:
Pentium 4 3.2GHz
1024MB DDR400 RAM

I dont play first person games, I play more of the simulation type games.
Eg, The Sims, Sim City 4
I also will be using the new computer for a lot of video editing.

:)

215539 2004-02-14 20:30:00 Try the leadtek A360TDH 256meg DDR and comes with My Vivo which is used for direct imput of video from a camera or VCR for video editing is $354.00. Leadtek are a good reliable company that make excellent product at an affordable price. My last two cards have been leadteck and I have had no problems with them. With Asus I had nothing but problems. IMHO. :-) Odin (227)
215540 2004-02-14 20:41:00 I took a look at that, and yes, it's very similar to Asus's version.
I have a Leadtek TVTuner card which came with a lot of video editing software.

Anyone else have any recommendations?

215541 2004-02-14 20:42:00 Hi.
I'd go with this:

Radeon 9600 XT 256Mb $327 incl GST (and free shipping!)

I have this in my machine (which is only half what you're got CPU & RAM wise) and it flies!
I play alot of FPS games - and it handles them fine.

This card (in must of the reviews i've read) is equilavant or better than the GF FX5700 Ultra.

You can buy it from here:

215542 2004-02-14 20:53:00 Excellent!
I read the little review in PC World about the GexCube's 9800XT and that came out good, so I have no doubt that the 9600XT is good too!
And at that price, it sounds damn awesome.
Thanks heaps.

Can ayone see anything that can possibly beat that?

The Geforce FX5950 Ultra could . They are probably neck and neck .

Don't bother with a Geforce XT of any kind . . . those are the budget cards, whereas an XT on an Radeon is a premium card .

If price is no barrier, consider a Radeon 9800XT or a Geforce FX5950U .

I'm surprised your PC store doesn't carry either high end card, although they might be able to order for you?

Pricespy lists them as being around the $849 mark for the FX5950U card, and $830 for the 9800XT card .

Your choice as to whether you are an ATI or nVidia fanboy .

Lo .

215544 2004-02-14 22:51:00 if you want to spend BIG bucks, and get a high end card - go for something in the 9800 ATi series, but, if you don't wanna spend that much, go for the 9600 xt, like i said, it handles fine on my PC.
I'm playing C&C generals zero hour - all settings maxed out - fine on my pc (and with my previous GF FX5200 - i had it on low just to make it playabel :(

Bit unfair, as an FX5200 is only a dressed up MX440.

And like I said, anything from an ATI 9800 range or FX5900U or FX5950U would be fine.

Lo.
