215328 2004-02-13 23:13:00 I am looking at building a PC for myself and was wondering if anybody has used an Elitegroup 661FX-M motherboard and if so what did you think of it,on paper it looks good with good on board video,I was going to setup with a p4 2.8 processor,I am looking at this one as my choice of supplier is Protac International for the components as I can buy from them at reseller prices.
If this is not a good board which one would you buy in my position,
www.protacnz.co.nz
I am happy with on board video and sound to start with to keep price down.
Thanks,
John.

215332 2004-02-14 02:08:00 ECS are a budget manafacture. you get what you pay for. however they are proberly one of the better budget brands. personally i would look for a better brand even if it means buying a cheaper cpu. tweak'e (174)
215333 2004-02-14 03:35:00 Thanks for the info,what would be a better choise. john r (782)
215334 2004-02-14 23:09:00 It depends on what you want to use it for. If you want to play games, I wouldnt bother with mobos with onboard video. There's not enough ram on them. Asus are a good brand. And pretty reliable. I've made 3 systems up with the Asus P4P800, P4S8X-X, and the P4B. The P4B was OK, BUT only uses SD RAM. And was pretty slow. And not much onboard. So, the more you put in it. The more it tends to heat up.

The other 2 are good. BOTH have USB 2 onboard (the P4S 6 USB 2), DDR RAM, whereas the P4P, has 8 USB 2 onboard. Both can go over 3.0 ghz. If you want to use Hyperthreading, with your CPU, it'll be better if you get a motherboard with a 800 fsb (If you use 2000, or XP). As any CPU over 2.4 can use Hyperthreading. 533 MHZ CPU's need 3 ghz at least to support HT.

The other diff between these 2 also, is the the P4P800 supports SATA
(only 0) not 1. BUT I only have 1 SATA hdd. And have no need for SATA raid, or striping. And umm, the CPU temp stays at a reasonable temp. Atm, this is running at 29 degrees. I would say the more a motherboard has onboard, the better it'll be for your system. It wont overheat as fast.

As if you kept on putting things in the PCI slots.

215335 2004-02-15 00:37:00 Again all good info,the hyperthreading info is interesting,the 661FX-M will do 800 fsb and for an extra $90 I can have a P4 2.8 800 fsb.
I will look at the boards you have mentioned,I will be shopping to a price.

215336 2004-02-15 01:37:00 Hyperthreading is good, if programs you use have been updated to use it. Some programs, I found out dont work that good, when HT is enabled.

Until maybe you update the drivers or the software, for whatever it is.

The Leadtek tv tuner, I use here tended to freeze the system on the odd occasion. The only way I could fix it, was to get updated drivers, and the updated TV tuner software. Now it seems to work a OK.

Most of the hardware in this PC, is for video editing. It has a PCI firewire card in it. I got Ulead Moviefactory and Videostudio, when I purchased the tuner. I think Moviefactory, since I use HT. Makes use of it, and makes rendering when using a DV cam thru firewire, 32 percent faster
when it burns/converts to DVD.I think this program is the only program
currently on my system that makes full use of HT. Hyperthreading is also good, coz it uses 1 CPU and makes it into 2. Saves you buying 2 separate CPU's.
