215409 2004-02-20 07:16:00 Just out of interest,do they actually count a gig as 1024mb?...i have an article here in an aussie mag where they are critising isp's for counting a gig as 1000mb,just like the hard drive manufacturers do.

That is in Aussie though.

215410 2004-02-20 07:56:00 Hmmm thats an interesting thought. I'd criticise them too :p But woosh say 10x the median of 700mb so I guess they definitely mean 7000mb, and not 7168mb.

lol! I think saying you can download unlimited but then have a reasonable use clause is definitely false advertising. Unlimited = unlimited. If someone has to conform to reasonable use and not be able to download unlimited data then thats lying!

There Is No Such Thing As A Free Lunch

If you are getting more than you are paying for, someone else is paying more than they should be.

215412 2004-02-20 08:22:00 Just read their T&C

As it stands at the moment, Unlimited (subject to reasonable use) is unlimited. If you exceed 7 GB, they have the right to "discuss" the matter with you.

They have the right to offer you another plan (which they don't appear to currently have). If things go sour they can cease service. Until they do, your download is Unlimited in nature.
They do not say you will be disconnected the moment you go over 7 GB, nor do they say they will charge you for data at that time. They can do either, if they change your account type, but thats after the "discussion".

They cannot change anything without 1 months notice. Until then Unlimited is unlimited.

So, while you are on Unlimited, its unlimited. When you are not, it's not.

Just like the restaurant owner can legally evict you if you act unreasonably with your eating habits in her "all you can eat" restaurant.

Remember if just one byte of data was from illegally downloaded material in your 7+ GB, you have breached the T&C anyway. Not that's what anyone would use it for...

215413 2004-02-20 10:48:00 I guess that puts it in perspective Godfather. I guess I could clock up a huge amount, then when they ring, ask to pay a bit more for real unlimited. Or if they want to D/C me, just give them the runaround and make a new ISP account with them every month.

How exactly do you download an illegal byte of data. Theres 8bits in that byte, and with only 2 combinations of that bit, 0 or 1 so thats like only 56 possible configurations a byte could have. That would make most bytes on the internet illegal.

215414 2004-02-20 12:40:00 I maximize my use transfering 60+ gb of data a month .

Never had a call .

simple as that, if they did call I would say "Unlimited" & that would be that . there is no other discussion . Until they alter their plan type I can traffic as much as I am capable of .

I did about 15 gigs of Legal .iso files the first month I got JetStream Starter. All OSS under the GPL.

So the ad should say something like:
You get Unlimited for the first month, maybe two. Then if you've gone over 10x the origional mean download amount, we'll give you a call and tell you you're using too much of your "Unlimited" transfer, which is no longer unlimited because its restricted to "reasonable use".

So its not totally unlimited unless you reservee the right to hang up on the Sales person at any given time?

I'd love to see a Woosh representative post on here.....

Chill.

The maths in here has me a bit (or two) confused - a different binary code ? ;-)

Hehe I probably got it wrong, but I thought it was a permutation.

1111 1111 = 1combo
0000 0000 = another combo

So to work out all the possible configurations I think you go 8P2 on your calculator. It might be a combination though. ?:|
