216055 2004-02-16 23:14:00 A friend arrived in with a Portege 620CT Laptop which has been given to her, when we turn it on it goes through a memory initialize, then says -Insert system disk in drive - You are talking to complete amatures in this field - I scrabbled around and found a set of floppy discs of Microsoft Windows for Workgroups 3.11 from a now defunct 386 of ours, are these the ones that the laptop could use? 216056 2004-02-17 00:28:00 I would think that the disk that is required would have come with the computer originally.
See if the previous owner still has the disk(s).

216057 2004-02-17 00:29:00 If the laptop does not have an Operating System then putting the first floppy in an installing 3.11 could be an option.

You may be wiser however to get hold of a Window 98 or 95 install disk, as these operating systems offer more as far as net connectibility goes.

TradeMe (www.trademe.co.nz) have quite a few win 98 disks for sale starting around $50.

216058 2004-02-17 00:29:00 You'll need Dos installed before you can install WfW. Any ver 6 of MS Dos will do-6.00, 6.2, 6.21 or 6.22. mark.p (383)
216059 2004-02-17 00:39:00 Win 98 in 8 megs of ram? Yeah right ;)
Looks like it can be updated a bit though-

216060 2004-02-17 01:06:00 If it's only got the 8megs of ram and you install dos with WfW you can give WfW the
win9x look by using Calmira- www.calmira.de/ -There is even an XP theme ;) . There is also a good deal of support for dos and WfW 3.x over at computing.net. You'll find the folk there very helpfull (as you do the folk here I might add)

216061 2004-02-17 01:14:00 Thanks for the help
The laptop was originally given to her by an overseas student boarder, it then sat in the back of her cupboard for several years, (she has lost contact with the boarder), but now she wants to write 'the great NZ novel' so only wants to use it as a word processor that can travel.
So if what I have read so far is - if we get hold of DOS on floppy disk load that, then load the Windows for Workgroups (or have a look on Trade Me for Windows 95 on floppy disc) , then load Works 4.5 it should be all go. (the laptop has an external floppy disc unit which has to be attached)
Thanks again Heather

216062 2004-02-17 01:25:00 Go for it girl!! mark.p (383)
216063 2004-02-17 04:39:00 Btw Works 4.5 wont run on WfW but there are still plenty of choices with regard to wordprocessors. mark.p (383)
