215736 2004-02-15 08:26:00 Found that my computer ( uses XP Pro) won't recognise the camera anymore. By a process of elimination I've confirmed that the USB ports are OK, the cable between Camera & USB is OK - Ive tried my camera & cable, plus a new cable on 3 different computers without success. I can read the memory Stick with an External card reader plugged into the USB port previously used by the camera so I reckon that the problem lies within the Camera.
Everything worked fine before I went on holiday. On return, the camera
didn't & I'm suspicious that because it went through a couple of Airport security scanners maybe the 'firmware' or whatever has been corrupted or wiped.
Whilst I'm happy to use the Card Reader to read the Memory Stick I'd still be keen to get the camera working as it did previously. Has anyone any ideas?

215737 2004-02-15 09:11:00 What ever has happened to the camera I think it is very unlikely that the airport scanners did the deed. See sites like: www.photo.net JohnD (509)
215738 2004-02-15 09:43:00 You possibly need to remove the device for the camera by uninstalling the driver. Check in the Device Manager if you can remove it.

When you plug it into the USB port, can you still access anything on the memory stick by going into MyComputer and accessing the camera there?

215739 2004-02-15 09:58:00 I've tried all that........as I said, I plug in the Camera, look in My Computer & find nothing. Is there any way of overwriting or re-installing the firmware in one of these cameras? I guess there could even be a broken connection within the camera but I'm sure as hell not going to delve inside to find out :) audiom (5279)
215740 2004-02-15 19:30:00 If you had travel insurance I would suggest taking the camera to a camera shop to seek their opinion on whether the camera is damaged and if so obtain their written opinion and contact your travel insurance broker. Alternatively, if your camera is still under warranty you could contact the shop where it was purchased from and seek advice. tommy (2826)
215741 2004-02-16 03:18:00 I take it the camera is still working as a camera. There's probably a way to reload the firmware, but it would be a bit odd for only the communications part of it to stop working. :D

I'd try to remove all the software at the computer end, and reisnatll it.

But audiom said he/she tried the camera on 3 different computers. What good is removing and reinstalling the software going to do?

215743 2004-02-16 04:15:00 Some camera's require being in a specific mode to use a USB connection - are you sure it's in the right mode (switch/dial in the right place etc).

If it's not working on more than one PC then it's gotta be something at the camera end. Try another cable, check the camera settings.

Maybe a quick RTFM as well to see if there is any troubleshooting info.

215744 2004-02-16 04:21:00 My nephew had his Panasonic LC40 ($ 875) drop into a puddle about 1 cm deep. He picked it up immediately and it still worked, but after a few minutes ceased to go and is now dead. I have looked at it. Batt is fully charged, all switches set to operate but absoluteiy no sign of life. The camera shows no physical sign that it has ever been in water and no damage except for a few superficial usage scratches. Does anyone know anything about these cameras at all as far as whether or not they have a fuse in-line between the battery and the main pcb. Maybe a bit of grit jammed something moving and stalled a motor and the fuse blew? I am going to take it to pieces, as soon as I have a spare couple of hours and feel in a fixing mood, and see if there is anything obvious wrong. Any suggestions? Don't worry insurance supplied a new one.

215745 2004-02-16 04:57:00 Thanks for all the suggestions so far. Lets recap..... the Camera works fine as a Camera. The memory sticks( 8mb & 32mb) work fine too 'cos I can drop the sticks into a card reader attached to my computer and access all the photos. I've tried a new cable - still no go. The manual doesn't give any pointers either.
It has to be a problem in the Camera end.
I ran this all past a local digital camera specialist and he has come to the same conclusion as me. The fix though might not be economic :(
As I still have full functionality using the card reader, I might just quit while I'm ahead. It would have been nice to have the Camera works as it originally did.
