215894 2004-02-16 01:51:00 This is an unresolved post from before. I have rewritten to make understanding it easier.

System: XP-h on an Athalon 2000, with 512 Meg RAM, etc etc etc

I had a problem with outlook after I installed norton firewall.
I already had norton system owrks in place and it worked fine albeit very slowly.

After the problem I uninstalled Norton firewall AND System works (Correctly)

Now I can't receive mail, I can't get outlook to go to my mail account. (Outlook express with the same info worked first time)

I uninstalled and reinstalled with full reboots. Still not working.

When you press the send receive button, it makes like it goes and gets the mail, no errors, but it says completed - immediatly. Almost no delay. Way too fast for getting "No" mail.

HELP

I hate OE, and use the other features in outlook a lot; like the word spell checker, and the calendar. Does Open Office have these features?

Many thanx

215895 2004-02-16 02:08:00 Have you stopped to think maybe you don't have any mail to get ?
Just a thought.

215896 2004-02-16 02:14:00 Have a look in your e-mail settings. It's more than likely that Norton's has replaced your e-mail server settings and hasn't reverted them back to original when you uninstalled Norton's. Has this happen to a freind a while back on a win98 box. mark.p (383)
215897 2004-02-16 03:26:00 That last post is on the button........norton detours your mail thru it's internal 'proxy' server.........all you need to do is to make sure that norton is NOT set to automatically scan yoru emails........dont panic this is what norton suggest and they say that it is not harmful cause if/when you are silly enuf to clik an attachement that you shouldn't nortons realtime scanner will jump up and warn you of viruses drcspy (146)
215898 2004-02-16 04:34:00 Other than the obvious mail account settings, is there anywhere else I can look.

Mail is received on the OExpress program after I try Outlook, remember, I said it receives the mail way too quickly, it doesnt go to the ISP server at all, way too fast.

215899 2004-02-16 07:07:00 I should have said that my backup Internet exporer goes and gets the mail with no problem when outlook fails

It says it goes and get the mail but it *immediatly* says it is done even though there is mail waiting

215900 2004-02-16 07:46:00 I think the post about Norton replacing the IP address is correct. In Outlook, go to Tools|Services and select the "Information Service" you are worried about. It will be called My Email, or CapnRon Email or something. Then click Properties. Click the "Servers" tab. This is from memory, but if Norton has intervened, the "Incoming Mail" will say something like 127.0.0.1 whereas it should point to your ISP, in my case "pop.ihug.co.nz". Ditto the outgoing mail should say (e.g.) "smtp.ihug.co.nz". You may need to check with your ISP as what the correct addresses are.

OK all the way out, close and re-open Outlook, and see how you go.

215901 2004-02-16 08:17:00 tbacon you got it correct............that's the 'local ip' that norton uses.........I KNOW this cause I've come across the exact issue before
you NEED to disable the norton email scan
and if you goto the help file in norton it'll tell you the same thing as I did

and as tbacon says........goto the mail account properties fields and change the 'server' settings to pop3.ihug.co.nz or whatever it is......and the smtp settings too........when you've done that create a new email and send it to your self then hit send receive and make sure it comes back

215902 2004-02-16 09:10:00 One thought is that, if Nortons left some bits behind after you uninstalled it (as it is want to do) you may need to get yourself a registry cleaner to get the last traces of it or it may reimpose itself on Outlook mail handling.

Doesn't look like Norton settings to me, if the above is true.

Perhaps people should read the first post all the way through before commenting.

Perhaps if Outlook was blocked by Norton Firewall, that setting is still in place even after the uninstall - happens quite commonly with ZoneAlarm. I've got a fix that will resolve that, however it's quite a long set of instructions.

Can post them tomorrow when I'm back at work.

Couple of other things in the interim.

Shut the PC down.
Start it up.
Do nothing aside from start Outlook and connect (I assume Outlook is invoking a dial-up connection)?
Open a command prompt (Start --> Run --> command --> OK
Type in netstat -a and press enter
It will list all current connections and should show if anything has connected to pop.isp.co.nz or whatever.
