216325 2004-02-17 22:32:00 Morning all

Am just mucking about with setting up my first WLAN - 802.11b.
Have a small network here, and one laptop has built in WLAN and have purchased an access point.

I have a connection between the laptop and the access point and the user can browse the net and get email etc, but only with WEP turned off.
My question is: I've setup the AP (a CNet unit) to only accept signals from the laptop's MAC address.
So do I need WEP or is this secure enough? In my mind the MAC address is all that's needed but need some reassurance...

Cheers for any suggestions.

216326 2004-02-17 22:45:00 No, the MAC address can be spoofed... use WEP 128bit, or if you wont better then use VPN connections. ugh1 (4204)
216327 2004-02-17 23:07:00 fair enough will do.
Problem now is that even though the interface of the ap is quite straight forward in setting WEp at 128 bits, the corresponding steup at the laptop doesn't seem to gel.
Everytime I set WEP I lose the connection at the laptop no matter what settings I check/uncheck add etc.
Is there any specific process for settings for WEP at the user end? It's running XP Pro.

216328 2004-02-17 23:19:00 On the AP it should give you an option to generate a 128bit WEP key automatically. Either by putting in a phrase of your choise or it will automatically create one. You then need to write down this key which will be in the format of xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx.xx

Then on the WinXP PC put this key in without the dots (or dashes) between each pair of digits and you should be sweet.

I can see where I can enable WEP at 128 bit and then the options are either create with passphrase or manual entry. If I create with passphrase no text or anything else is displayed for me to carry over to the laptop.
If I use manual entry I can enter 12 blocks of hex numbers and then take these to the laptop but still no connection even appears at the laptop...the interface is so simple it seems to be missing something...or I am :)
