216251 2004-02-17 08:57:00 Am trying to send a fairly large file(6 meg) file through O.E. kept getting a server time out and then the error message below after about 2.5 meg sent. Have tried sending three or four times and get the same result. Rang the xtra help desk as it refered to a server time out so I thought it must be a problem at there end, tech dude told me to change the server timeout setting from 1 mins to 5 mins(thought this to be a bit strange as if the server was gone would it matter how long the pc waited for it?). Then he emailed me a check sheet with all the mumbo about phone adapter jacks, extensions and the like and said read it then ring them back if the problem persists.

Had a quick look tried to resend, had the same result so I rang them back, got a different dude, he said to send it through xtramail(which makes sense) but could not(or would not) tell me why I kept getting the server timing out. Is there anyone here that can tell me whats going on?

Running win 98se, o.e. 6

and also had disabled firewall and a.v. al port settings and pop3, smtp are correct. Only seem to have this problem when sending larger files.

216254 2004-02-17 23:40:00 Did sending it through XtraMail work? whiskeytangofoxtrot (438)
216255 2004-02-17 23:44:00 sure did, but I fell that that is irrelevant. The question I would like answered and the question that the dude at xtra wouldnt or couldnt tell me is why couldnt I send it through my o.e. and why was the server timing out. miknz (3731)
216256 2004-02-18 08:42:00 I have that same problem using Outlook, very annoying, so would also like to hear of a solution apart from using xtramail. donna (1667)
216257 2004-02-18 08:47:00 Commonly ISPs can have their connection time-outs set at 5 minutes . When a server is busy and slow, large attachments hit the time-out with the effect that you get the resulting Server Timeout message .

A common method of avoiding this problem is to set OE to check for new mail every 3 minutes . The server interprets this as activity and will reset its time-out counter and hopefully avoid the cut-off .
