216223 2004-02-17 07:48:00 Hi guys ^^

I have this friend who owns a AMD XP2400. A while ago, his little brother accidentally stuff/broke the CPU fan. So now he just have the original heatsink sitting on top of the CPU. For some reason his computer can still be booted up though his screen doesnt seem to be able to. He has a Ge4 MMX440 64MB (i even try booting it up with its onboard graphic but no luck). Everything inside his comp seem to be ok, though I havent checked the CPU yet. The funny thing is that no were no smoke coming out of his comp, nor was there any smell. It's been quite a while now, almost 3 months maybe.

What I would like to know is, what exactly is causing his monitor not booting up. And how is it possible for a Xp2400 not overheat with only its heatsink stuck on (no fan on top the clip was broken too) or has it already overheated?

Any help would be really great :)

Thanks

216224 2004-02-17 08:55:00 It has overheated, no doubt about it . . . without a CPU fan on an Athlon it will EASILY reach the highest temp that AMD recommends for it to function (90 degrees IIRC)

Sorry its fried, no smoke doesn't always been no damage . . . take off the heatsink and i wouldn't be surprised to see if the heatsink is a bit worse for wear as well . . .

I don't think warrenty will cover it either, cos i'm sure it says not to turn it on if the fan is broken . . .

The motherboard should probably make some beeps after the POST which specifiy the problem (read your mobo manual to get what the beeps mean) . Sadly enough there may be a small chance it has fried the CPU socket therefore rendering your motherboard useless :(

216225 2004-02-18 03:45:00 Thanks ^^

Though there were no weird beeps, its starts up as any normal computer would start up . . . that was what surprised me .

I guess its time for me to take apart his comp now >_<

Thanks alot

216226 2004-02-18 08:32:00 try getting a new chip... give that a try, if its not the CPU then we're looking at bigger problems...

216227 2004-02-18 08:47:00 I think the bigger problem probally resides between the keyboard and the chair. metla (154)
