216323 2004-03-01 08:16:00 I've fixed the variable connectivity problem by replacing the network card ($13.50 from TL Systems - how cheap is that?). Now everything seems at last to work OK with my old hub, outside the house infrastructure. For those with long memories, this thread was originally about missing pings on a home network. The dynalink switch has definitely now died (being replaced under warranty by TL Systems) so I'm guessing the problem was the switch gradually crapping out. I'll reserve final judgement until I have the new switch and I have re-connected everything through the house network. So good, one, Beama, it looks like you were right on the money! :D tbacon_nz (865)
216324 2004-03-08 05:29:00 Well folks, it looks like it is all sorted.

Problem 1 was the Dynalink switch. The power supply brick was faulty. Apparently it is a known problem, so if you have problems with your Dynalink switchgear, that may be the first place to look. Note that even with the dodgy power, the power LED on the switch still lights, so don't be fooled. Replaced under warranty by Dynalink via TL Systems

Problem 2 seems to have been a dodgy NIC. It worked OK when connected via a crossover cable, but didn't when connected straight through. Replaced with my bargain $13.50 card from TLS.

So it wasn't the firewall, it wasn't the DHCP, it wasn't the cables, it wasn't Norton, it wasn't my house infrastructure.

Thanks everyone for all your help, advice and suggestions. :D :x

One final question - how can I monitor the actual speed of my network, as opposed to the theoretical maximum?
