Caution on that. ADSL may not like a long extension cord. The typical extension cord is flat untwisted pair and may not be well suited to high frequency data. You could always make one up using standard telephone or data cabling though.

The router doesn't need a "firewall" if it uses NAT (Network Address Translation), as that provides a good level of inward bound security. Thats all I use (Alcatel Speedtouch Pro) and grc.com gives me 100% stealth without a software firewall.

Only consider USB connect as a very last resort. Network cards are very cheap. If you use a network card you could leave the router at the phone socket and run the cat 5 network cable to the PC instead of the phone line of course.

216512 2004-02-19 02:50:00 Before you jump ahead and order a splitter... I have ADSL Jetstart at home, with Sky Digital and a monitored alarm plugged in.

I download consistently around 16kbps and am only using filters. Up to you, but I went the original $99 self install cost, and saved myself another $150 on a 'hard-wired' install. The installer suggested I test it out first, and then said I could upgrade at any stage if the ADSL wasn't working properly.

Up to you really.

Lo.

216513 2004-02-19 09:16:00 Thank you one and all. I have a small footprint PC with limited expansion slots and I had hoped to free up a PCI slot when I dropped the 56k modem but it looks as though I will be installing an ethernet card. Raymondo (5284)
