Rephrase that:
MP3 / DVD Support in Redhat is non-existant due to legal hindrances with the local government bodies.

216450 2004-02-19 02:39:00 To be really accurate: No Linux distribution organisations supports MP3 or DVD players. The xmms team supports the xmms package.

Redhat just don't supply these players and encoders. If you plug a suitable player in to RH Linux, it works.

Redhat supply and support (if you pay for it) a working OS, and a selection of "open" and public domain applications. The ownership of the compression algorithm in MP3 is argued about. DVD players involve DeCSS encryption Arguments which involve lawyers get very expensive, so RH avoid the whole thing.

216451 2004-02-19 02:45:00 Okay, Again I stand corrected.

Redhat have no mp3 / dvd players bundled with their OS.
This sucks.

:D

Ark linux, and Im pretty sure Mandrake Linux both also include XMMS with their Distro's, but havent compiled it without the mp3lame libs.
Noatun also!

Why do Mandrakesoft feel they can deploy a Distro with DeCSS support wheras Redhat do not?

Personally, it doesnt bother me terribly much. I have the xmms source and ogle rpm's for when I do have to setup Redhat / Fedora boxes.

I like Ark. It works out of the box with almost everything.
In saying that, I use Gentoo, which is rather at the opposite end :p

Do Redhat have problems that Mandrake / Ark do not because of the Country they're from?

Do you know what NZ's stance on this is? I dont...

Cheers

Chill.

216452 2004-02-19 02:54:00 Red Hat make profits. Mandrake don't. Red Hat are worth suing. Graham L (2)
216453 2004-02-20 03:34:00 Yeah Chill I am using the OSS output plugin but still no sound?
All the volume levels are set correctly.

I know there's nothing wrong with my speakers or sound card cos they work fine in Windows.

I'm stumped to say the least :(

cheers
