216436 2004-02-18 09:18:00 Hi guysl, it's been a while but I've been fiddling with Linux for the best part of the last 2 weeks.

Sadly not all of it was good but the learning experience was invaluable to say the least.

After a very long and contemplative period, I decided today that I should re-install Red Hat 8 and start from scratch... the great thing about it is that all the questions I asked previously in my previous
post (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz)
were not an issue and I did everything I wanted to in the initial set up of the OS. I organised GRUB the way I wanted it,, I then mounted all my Windows partitions.

Unfortunately there are still a few things I have not managed to sort out just yet.

1stly.... I haven't installed the nVidia drivers yet... Ijust havn't gotten round to it yet.

2ndly.... I can't for the ;life of me understand why I can't play mp3 files using GNOME's audio player, I've followed the same advice I received in the previos post I did (the link above) and still nothing works.

I honestly don't know what the problem is.

3rdly.... Does anyone have the latest STABLE version of FEDORA, I've been trying to download it and I've had real problems, so far I"ve managed to get discs 1 and 2 but from different sites and I have disc 3 loaded up in my download manager.... I tried the Jetstreamgames ftp but that sucked and the downloads kept going past the the reported size of the ISO, so every time I tried buring the ISO Nero would tell me the block size was incorrect.

I didn't want to add this post to my existing one as I was a bit worried about the length.. however if what I did was incorrect I do apologise in advance....

cheers

216438 2004-02-18 09:45:00 Okay... A few things here:
Ive got the Fedora Core 1 .iso files, and pre-burnt CD's (Ive got a spare set here, email me if you want them. Check my user profile).

mp3 support in Redhat sucks badly. In fact, all media support in Redhat / Fedora sucks. No Mp3's, no dvd (or there wasnt dvd support out of the box in RH9).. It just bites.
If you email me, I'll talk to you about Ark Linux if its for Home use, Redhat sorely lacks, but its not too hard to fix if you like Redhat / Fedora :-)

nVidia drivers arent too hard to do, just follow the readme that Jen or Myself have posted a few times here and you should be peachy :-)

Hope this helps

216440 2004-02-18 10:19:00 Thanks Chill I'll e-mail you shortly.

Well the good news is I now have the nVidia drivers running, installation was a breeze and editing the conf file was a piece of cake.

One query though, when I go--->System Settings--->Display

Select Advanced Tab ... there's an option for "3D Hardware Acceleration" the writing is greyed out but the check box itself is white, I tried clicking on it but nothing happened. Should I be worried about this .....how do I enable 3D hardware acceleration?

I've downloaded the xmms rpm as stated by mark.p.... now how do I run the dam thing.

I've tried "xmms-mpg123-1.2.7-21.i386.rpm" in the terminal windows as root but nothing happens, it says unknown command...

216442 2004-02-18 10:43:00 That's because it ALWAYS uses Hardware Acceration if you've changed your Xf86Config file to use nvidia instead of nv or vesa :-)

Try this:
su -
[enter root password]
rpm -Uvh /home/chiefnz/xmms*.rpm

Cheers

216443 2004-02-18 17:53:00 Ok Chill I"ve typed the command you said and all I got was

" ################################### 100%
################################### 100%
1. xmms123 "

in the player's Options--->Audio I/O Plugins

I'm using "MPEG Layer 1/2/3 Player 1.2.7 [libmpg123.so]"

Under output Plugin
I'm using "aRTS DRiver 0.4 [libartsout.so]

With the above setting the songs time elapses properly and not in the fast forward fashion it did before.

Is xmms installed or have I stuffed something up?

cheers

216444 2004-02-18 19:57:00 THat's right, it should all work..??

Try using the OSS output driver if its not.

Run kmix to check volume levels.

216445 2004-02-18 23:51:00 MP3 support in Redhat Linux doesn't "suck". RedHat are a big company (which makes profits). There are various licensing problems with MP3, and Linux DVD playing is "illegal" in the US. The US is infested with lawyers. RH can't afford to distribute MP3 or DVD software. They are too good a target. I'm happy that they've spent money on making good software, rather than building up a hugely expensive legal department. Graham L (2)
