216834 2004-02-20 08:14:00 Hi there people,

A very off topic here ;\

Not to appear morbid but does anyone know where one could get a set of free plans to build ones own casket/coffin.

Tried google but it seems you still have to pay. :_|

cheers merlin-nz ;-)

216835 2004-02-20 09:50:00 Hi ya,
i dont know of any sights to use,

but do know you can order plain ones, and decorate them yourself or get ones pre printed with pictures, and now you can even pick your own colours and get them spray painted glossy style.
you can order timber ones, or custom wood and have your friends and yourself decorate it over time, thats a very personal input into your own coffin.
or you could just talk to your Local Funeral Director and see what other possiblities there are, ??? not saying you have to buy theirs but they do have a ongoing range, which is added to, modern styles or traditional styles available.

or just make a long wooden box, at a set length suitable for the intended person?

are you more worried about the outside or the inside?
usually a coffin come with no inside padding and these are added when the coffin has been picked / ordered and you can also pick what inserts / lace you want to use as well. the possibilities are endless i guess......

this help any???

216838 2004-02-20 11:48:00 Lie on a sheet of customwood, get someone to draw your outline.

Take it from there....

But - you must get up before they run the sheet through the saw, or the need will be very imminent.

Cardboard coffin with canvas handles . . . .

I dunno about you, but somehow the structural integrity of cardboard frightens me .

The memories I have of shifting house, carting groceries, packing books, boxing filing and having the box collapse and the contents spill out all over the place . . . . well ya can see where this is going .

216842 2004-02-20 12:04:00 Can't say I've been up close and personal with one . . .

Just cardboard + ~75kg on average of literally dead weight can't be a good combination . . .

I now have a somewhat morbid fascination with their construction . . .

216843 2004-02-20 12:12:00 WTF,

In legal and health reasons, all coffins have to be lined with plastic sheeting so will not leak, and cause a sag or hole in the outer layers of the cardboard coffins. and the base's are made of heavier pine or similar material, so unless a little over the recomended weight rage, these can be used for any one.
the plastic is stapled into the inside of coffin and then the soft padding layers and lace are stapled into place. (this is common in all preparation of coffins, ask you local Funeral Director, they should be happy to explain.)

im not saying i would like one of these, but people like to keep their options open. not that im going to have that choice apparently, ill get what im given im told.
